The Kansas City Royals are hosting the Detroit Tigers in this AL Central showdown on Monday night. These two clubs are both trying to climb up the division standings. The Royals are 45-45, and they’re two games behind the division-leading Cleveland Indians. The Tigers are a little bit further down on the totem pole. They’re six games back in the AL Central with a 41-49 record. Which one of these clubs will inch closer to the Indians with a win on Sunday?
The Detroit Tigers found a way to come away with a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays after 11 innings on Sunday. The Tigers only had 8 hits compared to 10 by the Jays, but they made them count. Justin Upton has been a huge contributor for Detroit’s offense. Upton leads the Tigers in batting average (.271) and RBIs (56). He also has 15 home runs in 2017. The Tigers will need Justin Upton to step up if they expect to beat Jason Vargas and the Royals on Monday.
Jordan Zimmerman will get the nod for the Tigers in this one. Zimmerman has really been struggling this season. The right-hander had a horrific outing in his last start against the Indians in Cleveland. Zimmerman only lasted 3 innings in a losing effort. He gave up 8 hits and 5 runs against the Tribe. He’ll try to bounce back as he takes on the Royals in this one.
The Kansas City Royals came up with a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Royals. Kansas City’s lineup has really been struggling this season. The Royals have only scored 365 runs this season, which is the fourth-fewest in the majors. Furthermore, they have the second-worst on-base percentage (.299) in either league.
Jason Vargas will get the start against the Tigers in this one. Vargas has had an incredible season thus far. However, he struggled in his last outing. The veteran lefty gave up 8 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings against the Mariners in Seattle. His start against the M’s resulted in a no-decision, but he was lucky to escape without a loss. Vargas will try to pick up his 13th win of the season on Monday against the Tigers.
The Detroit Tigers are:
The Kansas City Royals are:
Jason Vargas has been fantastic on the mound. He has been ridiculously good at home. Vargas has a 7-1 record at home in 9 starts this season. He has a 1.84 ERA, and opposing batters are hitting just .221 against the lefty at Kauffman Stadium. The Tigers have been terrible on the road, and I think they’ll have a tough time against Vargas in this one. I like the Royals to win this one on Monday night in Kansas City.
The San Francisco 49ers were a 2-14 team last season and they appear to be headed towards another rough year. Last season, the Niners had two wins and both came against the sorry R... Read More
