Kansas City Royals (57-57) vs. Chicago White Sox (44-68)
MLB Baseball: Saturday August 12th, 7:10 pm EST
Ian Kennedy (4-8, 4.83 ERA) vs. James Shields (2-4, 6.03 ERA)
Line: Kansas City -160
The Royals take on the White Sox in the middle game of a three game series on Saturday night. The Royals have been in the thick of the AL Central race as well as the wild card over the last several weeks, but they have lost their last four games and have fallen four games behind the Indians. They have also been caught by the Twins who were four games behind them a mere four days ago.
They just completed a four game series with the Cardinals, with each team getting two games at home. The Cardinals swept them, completing the sweep by winning 8-6 on Thursday night. As for the White Sox there season has been over for several months, although they have won three straight games as of this writing.
Ian Kennedy will be on the hill for the Royals on Saturday night, looking to earn his fifth win of the year. He has eight losses, so this hasn’t been a season to remember for the veteran right hander. But he is pitching in the middle of a pennant race, so that’s not anything to shake your fist at. The problem, is he has been costing the Royals games.
He’s been particularly bad over his last two starts. He’s gone a total of 10 innings and he’s allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs during that time. He lost both of those games, right when the Royals needed him most. Now, he gets the lowly White Sox and hopefully he can get thorough this lineup.
James Shields wil be going against Ian Kennedy on Saturday night, looking to finish up what a few wins in what could be the last season of his career. I haven’t heard that as fact, but he is 35 years old and has an ERA of over six. I can’t imagine there’s many teams who would want to sign him. Making it worse, he’s playing out the string on a last place White Sox team.
He’s given up at least three earned runs in six straight games, something that the old James Shields never would have done. He used to have some of the best breaking stuff in the game. His WHIP is 1.60 and batters are hitting .270 against him. He’s allowed way too many walks, 31 in 62 innings.

Ian Kennedy has been good on four days rest and against the AL Central, while the White Sox have struggled against righties. That’s enough for me. Let’s take the Royals on Saturday.
