MLB: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 8:05 p.m. EST

The Line: Texas Rangers -105/Seattle Mariners -105. Total: 11.

The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners will continue a four-game series when they meet again at Globe Life Park in Texas on Wednesday night. Seattle dropped the opener on Monday for its second loss in a row. The Rangers halted a two-game skid of their own with that victory.

Mariners need to make a move

Both the Mariners and Rangers are in need of a late-season push in order to make the playoffs. It was Texas that got that effort started on the right foot in this series, prevailing 5-3 in the opener on Monday. The Mariners’ fifth defeat in their last seven outings dropped them 3.5 games behind the Twins f0r the American League’s second wild card. Right fielder Mitch Haniger went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Mariners and has recorded seven multi-hit performances over his last 11 games. Center fielder Jarrod Dyson (groin) didn’t travel with the team and will undergo season-ending injury.

Right-hander Mike Leake is taking the mound for Seattle on Wednesday. Leake is 9-12 with a respectable 4.10 ERA this season, and he has been stellar since being acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis late last month. Through two starts with his new team, the 29-year-old is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA. Leake most recently faced the Angels last Friday, when he went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out five batters during a 4-3 victory.

Mazara still rolling for Texas

The Rangers were two games behind Minnesota for the American League’s second wild-card spot heading into Tuesday. Texas got a solo homer from Delino DeShields and two-run doubles from Shin-Soo Choo and Nomar Mazara in Monday’s series-opening success. Mazara has recorded three homers and eight RBIs this month and is seven shy of his first 100-RBI season. Infielder Joey Gallo is hitless in seven at-bats and buried in a nine-game homer-less drought. Second baseman Rougned Odor (ankle) was banged up on Sunday but he managed ti play on Monday and has not missed a single game this year.

Martin Perez will oppose Leake on Wednesday. The left-hander is a mediocre 12-10 with a 4.81 ERA in 2017. He has now allowed more than three runs in a start since Aug. 18 and he has given up more than three runs only once in his last seven outings. Perez most recently took the mound against the Yankees last Friday, when he went 5.2 innings and surrendered five runs (just two earned) on eight hits and one walk in an 11-5 victory.

MLB Trends:

The Seattle Mariners are:

  • 2-5 in their last seven overall
  • 0-6 in their last six road games
  • 1-8 in their last nine road games against Texas

The Texas Rangers are:

  • 15-6 in their last 21 games against teams with losing records
  • 13-4 in their last 17 home games against teams with losing records
  • 22-8 in their last 30 home games against teams with road winning percentages under .400

Texas has won each of Perez’s last seven starts, five of which have been quality. He was one out away from turning in another quality start but exited before completing the sixth inning against the Yankees last Friday. The Rangers have scored at least four runs in nine of their last 10 contests. Seattle is 2-5 in its last seven overall and 0-6 in its last six on the road. The Rangers are 15-6 in their last 21 against losing opponents, 13-4 in their last 17 at home against losing opponents, 22-8 in their last 30 at home against opponents with road winning percentages under .400, and 8-1 in their last nine at home against the Mariners. Look for those trends to continue.

Pick: Texas Rangers -105
