Missouri Valley Conference action and the Indiana State Sycamores will rumble with the Drake Bulldogs at Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The Sycamores enter this contest off a 77-58 home loss to Illinois State, while the Bulldogs are off an 88-75 home win over Evansville.
Indiana State is not having a good year so far as they are just 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the MVC. Their first three losses in the conference were all close, but in their last game they fell at home by 19 points to Illinois State. They have played two of their conference games in OT and they fell by just eight against Wichita State, so they really haven’t played that badly until the game vs Illinois State. They shot just 40.0% overall, but they did hit 40.9% from long range. That isn’t terrible, but they were also just five of 11 from the charity stripe and they were outrebounded by 16. The Sycamores were led by Everett Clemons and Jordan Barnes, who each had 14 points in the game, while Brenton Scott had 12. The defense struggled, especially their three-point defense, which allowed the Redbirds to hit 52.0% of their shots from long range. Leading the team in scoring this year has been Brenton Scott, who is averaging 18.7 ppg on the year and is the only player on the team that averages more than 9.4 ppg.
Indiana State checks in at 223rd in the nation in scoring, putting up 72.4 ppg, while also ranking 286th in FG% (41.9%), 196th in 3-point shooting (34.8%) and 279th in free throw shooting (65.6%). At the defensive end of the floor they have been poor as they come in ranked 230th in points allowed, giving up 73.8 ppg, while also ranking 83rd in defensive FG% (40.9%) and 244th in 3-point defense (35.8%).
The Drake Bulldogs are off to a rough 4-12 start, but they have pulled a couple of upsets in the MVC and are 2-2 in league play now. Both wins have come here at home and they hope to keep it going vs an Illinois State team that has yet to win a league game. Despite the upsets over Loyola-Chicago and Evansville, they still don’t look like a team that will threaten many in the MVC. Their offense is below average, while their defense has been very bad. In their last game, they took down Evansville by a score of 88-75 and they were led in the game Reed Timmer, who put up 28 points in the win. Timmer has been their leading scorer this year as he has averaged 16.6 ppg so far. 2nd in the win over the Purple aces was Ore Arogundade, who had 17, while 3rd was Casey Schlatter at 11. The Bulldogs shot well as they hit 45.9% of their shots overall, but they also allowed 48.3% shooting. Timmer leads the team in scoring, while 2nd is Billy Wampler at 11.9 ppg and he is the only other player on the team that is averaging in double-figures.
The Bulldogs enter this contest ranked 179th in the nation in scoring, putting up 74.1 ppg, while also ranking 209th in FG% (43.6%), 168th in 3-point shooting (35.5%) and 26th in free throw shooting (75.9%). At the defensive end of the floor they have been poor as they come in ranked 280th in points allowed, giving up 76.8 ppg, while also ranking 296h in defensive FG% (46.2%) and 294th in 3-point defense (37.8%).
Indiana State is:
The Sycamores have struggled out the gate in MVC play, while Drake has started at 2-2 in league play. Still, the Sycamores are the better team with the better defense and they will find a way to get their first conference win of the year over a bad Drake team. T he road team is 5-2 ATS the last seven games in this series, so take the desperate road team in this one as they notch their first MVC win of the year.
