Santa Clara vs. San Diego

NCAA Basketball:  Thursday, January 12th, 10:00 pm EST

Line:  Santa Clara -3

Total: 129.5

The Broncos of Santa Clara head to San Diego to take on the Toreros in a WCC battle on Thursday night.  These are similar teams with Santa Clara currently at 8-9 and 2-2 in conference, while San Diego is 8-8 overall and 1-3 in conference.  Both teams figure to end up near the bottom of the WCC, but Santa Clara does have one of the more exciting players in conference in Jared Brownridge.

Despite their mediocre records, both teams are over .500 against the spread.  The Broncos are 9-8 ATS overall, but only 3-4 on the road.  Meanwhile, the Toreros are 10-6 overall, but only 3-6 at home.  Look out for the Toreros on the road, where they are 7-0 ATS.

Santa Clara loses to LMU

After two nice wins, Santa Clara threw in a bit of a clunker on Saturday.  They played LMU even through a half, but then the Lions pulled away in the second half to win 66-56.  The Broncos offense which can be exciting at times, was very tame.  Leading scorer Jared Brownridge had his worst game in a long time, going one of 11 from the field and only one of eight from the three point line.  He finished with a measly five points.

The rest of the Bronco offense wasn’t much better.  Only two players scored in double digits and they shot 36% as a team and 26% from beyond the arc.  The lone bright spot was KJ Feagin who had 21 points.

San Diego beats Pepperdine

The Toreros got a much needed win on Saturday, defeating the Pepperdine Waves by a score of 76-68 on Saturday.  The Toreros were only up one at halftime and pulled away gradually in the second half.  They shot a very solid 48% as a team and an impressive 42% from beyond the arc.

Four of the five San Diego starters ended up scoring in double digits.  They were led by Tyler Williams who had a great all around game with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and he shot seven of 10 from the field.  The sophomore guard averages less than double digits on the year so this was truly a breakout game for him.

Trends:

The Santa Clara Broncos are:

  • 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
  • 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

The San Diego Toreros:

  • (no trends available)

I like the Broncos here.  This is one of the rare times where if the home team was playing on the road, I’d actually bet them here.  The Toreros are only 3-6 ATS at home and 7-0 on the road.  Let’s bet against that 3-6 and take the Broncos here, as they are over .500 ATS on the road.

Pick: Santa Clara
