2020 Northern Trust Predictions, Preview & Odds

The next stop on the PGA Tour is The Northern Trust which will take place at TPC Boston. This tournament marks the beginning of the FedEx Cup playoffs. This year’s playoffs should be fun to watch all the way through. Who will walk away with this year’s Cup? Can Tiger Woods make an improbable run? Can Rory McIlroy repeat as champ? All these questions and more will be answered in the next few weeks.

TPC Boston is a par-72, 7,241-yard golf course that many feel is one of the most pristine courses on the tour. The par-3s are very tough and it has a 600-yard par-5 but there is also a couple of driveable par-4s. The back nine is very tough and it should set up for a nice finish on Sunday. Patrick Reed won here last year as he beat Abraham Ancer by one stroke.

My Three Winners

Normally I go through a few golfers that I don’t feel have a chance to win but might be used in a prop or two later on. Well, this week, I will be going right to the fun stuff, and that is handing out winners… I hope. We note that there is no cut in this tournament. The playoffs start with 125 players and the top 70 from this tournament will move on.

The first winner on my list is Bryson DeChambeau at +1100. He is the last player on tour to win at TPC Boston, which came in 2018. This is a long course, which will reward some of the big hitters and there are none bigger than Bryson, who is 1st on tour in driving distance. He is also 21st in greens in regulation, 5th in putting, 8th in tee-to-green, and 1st in scoring average at 68.841. DeChambeau has finished in the top eight in five of his last seven starts and he was tied for 4th at the PGA Championship last week. Overall, he has nine top 10s in 14 events played this year. Chambeabu is 4th in FedEx Cup points and I see a big jump from him after a win at the Northern Trust.

Next on my list is Jason Day at +1800. After the break, Day missed the cut in three of his first four events but since then, he has finished 7th or better in his last four starts. He is quietly playing well and is off a tie for 4th at the PGA Championship. Day is just 80th in driving distance, but he is 3rd in SG around the green, 48th in putting and SG 15th in tee-to-green. He is also 2nd in sand save percentage and 62nd in SG approach to the green. Jason has been putting it together at the right time and with the momentum he has, I feel that he could be atop the leader board when everything is said and done.

Lastly, I will go with Dustin Johnson at +2000. A few weeks ago Johnson was dealing with a back injury, which forced him to withdraw from the 3M Open but he has bounced back with a T12th place finish at WGC: FedEx St. Jude Classic and then a T2nd place finish last week at the PGA Championship. Johnson likes this course as he has played here nine times in his career with four top 10s, including a 7th place finish back in 2018. Johnson is a big hitter as he ranks 22nd in driving distance, so it is a good thing the back is healed. He is 42nd in SG tee-to-green, 19th in birdie average, 15th in SG off the tee, and 80th in SG approach to the green. He has had issues with the putter at times, but I feel he can overcome those issues and walk away with the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
