Newcastle Draw With Brighton

Newcastle United ended a three-game losing streak after playing out a scoreless draw with Brighton & Hove Albion away at Amex Stadium on Monday. In what essentially was a drab encounter, the hosts had a penalty claim denied in the first half before substitute Andy Carroll missed a sitter for the Magpies, heading wide from inside the six-yard box late on in the game. Newcastle has now failed to win any of their last five Premier League fixtures (D2 L3) and currently occupy the 13th position in the standings (W11 D11 L15), being safe from relegation.

English midfielder Jonjo Shelvey leads the Magpies with six goals for the current Premier League season. Goalie Martin Dubravka, meanwhile, sits at the top of the league with 137 saves. He has registered 11 clean sheets in 37 contests this year and concedes a goal every 61 minutes of play. Newcastle has scored the 4th lowest amount of EPL markers this season (37) while delivering the 15th highest number of shots per game (10.7). The team is bottom of the league in ball possession (42.1%) and 16th in passing accuracy (75.5%).

Liverpool Beat Chelsea

Just before being officially presented with their first league trophy in 30 years, newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool (W31 D3 L3) marked their last home game of the ongoing EPL campaign with a 5-3 victory against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday, thus extending their unbeaten domestic run in the league to three full seasons. Naby Keita, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all scored for the Reds, who also equaled the record of 18 home triumphs in a single Premier League campaign.

Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah tops Liverpool’s scoring table with 19 tallies in the league. Goalie Alisson, meanwhile, resides 20th in the EPL with 57 saves. He has picked up 13 clean sheets in 28 outings during the current campaign and gives up a goal very 112 minutes on average. The Reds have netted the 2nd highest amount of league strikes this season (82) while taking the 3rd highest quantity of shots per game (15.6%). The team is 2nd in ball possession (59.3%) and 3rd in passing accuracy (84.2%).

Prediction

Newcastle United have won the final league game in each of the last five seasons, outscoring their opponents 17-1. Their last defeat on the final day, though, happened in 2013-14, and against none other than Liverpool. Such history repeating would give the Reds a chance to reach 99 points for the season, thus beating their record of 98 collected in 1978-79, when a victory was already worth three points. Still, Liverpool have been quite underwhelming on their travels lately, managing to muster just a single victory in their last seven away games in all competitions (W1 D1 L5), and have already failed to triumph in any of their final league road contests of a season since 2007-08 (D2 L3).
