2020 Safeway Open Preview, Predictions & Odds

The 2019-2020 PGA season is over and it ended with Dustin Johnson winning the FedEx Cup last week. In the age of Covid, there is no break between the start of last season and the new season and this one will begin with the Safeway Open, which will take place at Silverado Country Club in Napa, California. I have to say that I am sorry to see the season end as I did win two of the last three events and four overall since the restart. I am also sad to see that Dustin Johnson will not be in this event as I had been riding him of late.

Silverado Country Club is a par-72, 7200-yard course that has some short par-fives, which are all birdie opportunities. The course does play to the big-hitters, but having a solid short game is also a must as well. Cameron Champ won this event last year while Brendan Steele has won it twice. This should be a fun week, so let’s see if we can make some money.

My Three Winners

Last week I rode the hot hand of Dustin Johnson as one of My three winners and it was the 2nd time in the last three weeks that I had a winner in this spot. I also hit two of my three props as well. Let’s make some more money this week.

I will start off by taking Brendan Steele, who has won this event twice in his career. He has not fared well here the last two years but still, in a board that does not have many huge names on it, he cannot be overlooked. Steele finished last season ranked 38th in driving distance, 18th in SG: Approach To The Green, and 39th in SG: Tee-to-Green. Those are all solid numbers for this course and he was also a decent 73rd in SG: putting a year ago. He has made the cut in all of his last six events overall and is 7-for-7 in making the cut here at Silverado Country Club. At +2200, it is hard to pass Steele up.

Next, I will go with Doc Redman at +3300. Redman did miss the cut at the Northern Trust, which was the first leg of the FedEx Cup PLayoffs, so he has had some time off to regroup. Prior to that, he did finish 3rd at the Wyndham Championship, so he has a good chance here against a rather weak field overall. Doc has some nice rankings for this course as he was 13th in driving accuracy, 12th in Green In Regulation, 11th in SG: Approach to the Green, and 37th in SG: Tee-To-Green. He is not the biggest of hitters on tour but his short game should serve him well here. Redman would also like some retribution after missing the cut here last year. It was his only appearance on this course. Take Redman as a nice price here.

Lastly, we will go with Joel Dahmen at +2500. Dahmen looks read for a breakout season after finishing 10th at the PGA Championship and 20th at the BMW Championship. Dahmen had five top 10s last year and 11 top 25s, so I predict that he could be in for a very nice season. He is 115th in driving distance but 38th in driving accuracy, 29th in SG: Off The Tee, 31st in SG: Tee-To-Green, and 44th in SG: Approach to the Green. This one we will call a hunch, especially since he has missed the cut twice here and finished 46th in his other try at this venue. The field is not deep at all and that gives him a solid chance of winning it.
