Dustin Johnson Notches his 21st PGA Tour Win with Victory at Travelers

By Dave Shields

Dustin Johnson won his 21st career PGA Tour event Sunday, emerging victorious at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.

Johnson carded a 3-under par 67 to finish the tournament at 19-under.

Johnson had a few close calls on the back 9 Sunday. On 13 he hit his drive out of bounds and escaped with a bogey and at 15 he came within a few inches of putting his tee shot in the water. It got hung up in the rough, but it was so close to the water that Johnson had to take his shoes off, roll up his pants, and stand in the water to hit it. He hacked the chip only a few feet but then he put his next chip close and escaped with a par.Johnson had a few close calls on the back nine, hitting his drive out of bounds on 13 and barely putting his tee shot in the water, but

Then on the 16th, after a 30-minute storm delay, Johnson put his tee shot on the par 3 in the bunker. He hacked out but took a bogey to drop to 19-under, just one shot up on Kevin Streelman.

Streelman, the 2014 Travelers Championship winner had a chance to tie Johnson on 18, but his long birdie putt missed the mark. He finished with a 3-under par 67 which put him at 18-under for the tournament. He finished second all alone.

It was Johnsonʻs first win of the season and his first victory on tour since February 2019 at the WGC-Mexico. It also keeps alive his streak of winning at least one tournament a year. The win at the Travelerʻs marked the 13th year in a row that he has won at least one tournament. Only Jack Nicklaus (17), Arnold Palmer (17), Billy Casper (16), Lee Trevino (14) and Tiger Woods (14) have longer streaks. With a win next season, Johnson would catch Woods and Trevino.

“It feels great to get the win, I was due,” Johnson said in the post-match interview. On his winning streak, Johnson said “any time you are mentioned with those names it’s very good. I’m definitely proud of it and I want to keep it going.”

Will Gordon and Mackenzie Hughes finished in a tie for third at 17-under. Kevin Na took 5th all alone at 16-under, while a slew of golfers finished in a tie for 6th at 15-under, including Bryson DeChambeau. For DeChambeau, it was his 6th straight top 10 finish. Ryan Armour, Scott Stallings, Patton Kizzire, and Brendan Steele joined him at 15-under.

Third round leader Brendon Todd was cruising along until he made a mess on the 12th hole. His chip on to the green at the par 4 12th went soaring over the green. His chip back fell short and he wound up with a 7. The triple bogey sent him back to 15-under, 5 shots back, and he limped in with a 4-over par round of 74 to finish 11th at 14-under.

Next week the tour moves to Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club.

It was his first win of the season and his first win since February of 2019 at the WGC Mexico. It also keeps his streak of consecutive golf seasons with a win alive. This is the 13th straight golf season that Johnson has scored a PGA Tour victory. Only Jack Nicklaus (17), Arnold Palmer (17), Billy Casper (16), Lee Trevino (14), and Tiger Woods (14) have longer streaks. He can catch Tiger with a win next season.

Bryson DeChambeau finished in a tie for 4th -- his 6th straight top 10 finish.

Third round leader Brendon Todd was cruising along until he made a mess of the 12th hole. His pitch off the green went flying over the green, and then he botched his pitch on the other side of the green. Todd finished with a 3-o
