The fifth contest of the day will see FunPlus Phoenix take on DAMWON Gaming. The Mid-Season Cup 2020 is a battle between the top four teams from both the LCK (premier Korean League of Legends league) and the LPL (premier Chinese League of Legends league). The event is broken into two stages, Group Stage and Knockout Stage.
The eight participants are broken into two groups of four for the Group Stage. They then take place in a round-robin style bracket featuring six single-round matches between the four teams in one calendar day. The top two from each group will advance to a single elimination bracket for the Knockout Stage which will feature best-of-five round matches.
FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) Preview
FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) was the third place finisher during the LPL Spring 2020 Split. FPX was dominated 0-3 by JD Gaming (the future champion of the split) in the semifinals. They rebounded nicely with a dominating 3-0 victory of Invictus Gaming in the third-place match of the league.
FPX is consistently one of the world's top League of Legends teams. This is evident as they have appeared in four Premier Tier events since July of 2019 with a third-place finish, a second-place finish and two event wins under their belt. Their starting composition is super-talented in all five positions although the team is clearly headed by Doinb. In fact, Doinb was named to the 1st All-Pro Team during the Spring Split.
DAMWON Gaming (DWG) Preview
DAMWON Gaming has lost some firepower since their huge run in 2019 in which they won both a Premier Tier and Major Tier event.. They finished fourth in the LCK Spring Split. The team took an exit from the Playoffs of the split in the quarterfinals at the hands of DragonX in a 2-3 battle.
What makes DAMWON Gaming a good team is the fact that they rely heavily on teamwork to grab wins. Mid-laner ShowMaker and top-laner Nuguri are typically the players that lead the team into victory. Ghost and Nuclear have split time at the ADC position, although Ghost is arguably the better option of the two. If DAMWON has poor drafts, then it could be a long tournament for the team from the LCK.
Pick: Over 25.5 Kills (-115 @ Bovada)
I like the over on the spread of kills for this battle. This will be the last of three matches for both these teams on the day, and both will be in full-form once we reach this contest. DAMWON Gaming is the weakest of the four teams in this group, and this will be their best shot at a win. FunPlus Phoenix is a great team, but they are somewhat top-heavy with Doinb carrying the bulk of the load. I am expecting this match to be a slugfest with plenty of kills to go around for either side.
