Rahm Jumps into the Lead at Memorial as Field Fades

Jon Rahm stormed into the lead Saturday at theMemorial Tournament, and it was more of a case of everyone else falling back then Rahm going low.

Rahm shot a solid 4-under round of 68 to improve to 12-under. However, he couldn’t have imagined that all of his main competitors would have had gone backwards. Ryan Palmer and Tony Finau, who held the second-round lead, but went 1-over to fall to 8-under – four shots behind Rahm.

Danny Willett carded a 2-under 70 to move into third at 6-under, while Henrik Norlander and Jason Day are at 5-under. Chez Reavie and Matt Wallace are next at 4-under.

With a four-shot lead and a less than stellar leaderboard, this tournament is Rahm’s to win, minus any major meltdown. The 25-year old Rahm has 3 career PGA tour wins, his last one coming in April 2-019 at the Zurich Classic.

Among other big names, defending champion Patrick Cantlay shot 1-over on the day to fall to 3-under for the tournament. Rory McIlroy shot even par Saturday to stay at 2-under, while Jordan Spieth shot 2-over to fall to 2-under. Justin Thomas shot a 3-over 75 to drop to Even par for the tournament, while Tiger Woods was 1-under on the day to move to 2-over. For Tiger, playing in his first tournament since February, it was a day to build on.

“I was moving better today and felt like I did the first day, and consequently I could make the passes at the golf ball like I did the first day,” Woods said after the third round, reported the PGA. “Overall I felt like I played well today, controlled the ball well. I hit one really bad shot there at three, but other than that, it was a pretty good, solid day.”
