Recapping Round Two Of The Workday Charity OPen

By Dave Shields

Collin Morikawa had another great day on the golf course Friday as he carded a 6-under 66 to build on his lead at the second round of the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Morikawa improved to 13-under and held a three-shot lead over Kevin Streelman and Justin Thomas, who are both at 10-under. Streelman had the round of the day, firing an 8-under round of 64 while Thomas birdied 18 to card a 6-under 66.

The 23-year old Morikawa is one of the best young players in the game. He turned pro last year and made the cut in his first 22 PGA Tour starts, which is second all-time. Only Tiger Woods, who made the cut in his first 25 starts, had more.

In those first 22 starts, Morikawa notched his first PGA Tour victory, last year’s Barracuda Championship, and he has two runner up finishes, including the Charles Schwab Challenge a few weeks ago at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where he lost in a playoff to Daniel Berger.

Morikawa had his streak of 22 made cuts in a row snapped two weeks ago at the Traveler’s Championship in Cromwell, Conn., but he’s back in a big way this week at Muirfield Village.

"It's a beautiful track. It's a very tough course, obviously, but you just have to map your way around it," Morikawa said after carding a 7-under in the first round, reported the PGA. "You've got to be really smart. If you're not in the fairway, you've got to make sure you play smart. I was playing smart, but I felt good with my irons, so I was able to attack some pins when they were accessible."

Sam Burns and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for third at 9-under, while Viktor Hovland is 5 shots back at 8-under after carding a 5-under 67.

The projected cut was 2-under, which leaves some big names home for the weekend, including Brooks Koepka at 1-under, Jordan Spieth, who was at E, Marc Leishman at 5-over, Bubba Watson at 8-over, and Justin Rose at 10-over.

Koepka fell to 4-over after the 11th hole and then made a charge, birdieing 5 of the last 7 holes to get to 1-under, but it looks like he fell one shot short of making the cut.
