Washington to be called “Washington Football Team” until new nickname is adopted

The NFL offseason is nearly over and the term “Redskins” is now officially over. Washington will now be called “Washington Football team” effective immediately. This is the name at this time, until the team officially finds a new nickname.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Washington Football team will not have any change to its color scheme. However, the original logo on the helmet will be replaced by the player’s number in gold. They open with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13 and by then, the team will continue the process of removing the team name from physical and digital spaces in the next 50 days.

The helmets and uniforms will be used for the 2020 season and fans will be able to purchase merchandise with “Washington Football Team” from NFL Shop and Fanatics in the coming days.

On July 13, Washington announced that it had retired the “Redskins” name, which had been associated with the franchise for nearly 90 years. The name was removed due to pressure from major corporate sponsors, including FedEx, Nike, Target, Amazon and Walmart. FedEx said it would pull its signage from the FedEx Field if the name wasn’t changed.
