Wimbledon 2020 Has Been Canceled & Other Tennis News

The sports world continues to suffer as well from the Pandemic that has brought our country to a standstill. This is a time when everyone around the world could use a little distraction and for most, that is going to sporting events, or even watching them on TV. I know that I am missing that distraction.

The Tennis world originally postponed or canceled some of their events and you can now add another cancelation to the list. The 2020 Wimbledon Championships will not take place this year. They were scheduled for the end of June to the middle of July but have been canceled until next year.

The Championships have been canceled due to public health concerns, which are linked to the Covid-19 epidemic. Patrons who have bought tickets to this year’s event will be fully refunded.

The French Open was postponed until September 20th and that event is still scheduled to go on as planned. The U.S. Open is scheduled to be played from August 31st to September 13th is scheduled to go on at the moment but we do note that the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens is currently being converted into a temporary hospital. Stay tuned on that one.

“We will continue to play every single day as if the U.S. Open will be hosted, and hopefully we’ll be in a position 5 months from today to see players actually practicing on the courts right behind us and playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium,” said Daniel Zausner, the center’s chief operating officer.

“We understand the unique circumstances facing the All England Lawn and Tennis Club and the reasoning behind the decision to cancel the 2020 Wimbledon Championships,” the USTA said on Twitter Wednesday. “At this time the USTA still plans to host the U.S. Open as scheduled, and we continue to hone plans to stage the tournament. The USTA is carefully monitoring the rapidly-changing environment surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and is preparing for all contingencies.”

The UTSA will base all decisions on ensuring the health and well-being of the players and fans.
