What’s the deal with betting sites, Missouri and the law?

At the time of writing, traditional online betting sites as you and I know them – i.e., the sort that accept real money bets – are strictly off limits in Missouri. In fact, they’re as off limits as sprinting out onto the field mid-play in the Super Bowl.

I know, I know, there has been a lot of legal back and forth at the ballot lately in attempts to get a regulated betting market off the ground, with rumors that legalization might be on the cards for as early as December 2025, following the approval of Amendment 2 in November 2024.

But as of right now, real money online betting sites and brick and mortar retail ones both remain total no go zones in the state, I’m afraid.

So, when it comes to your alternatives, then, what kinds of betting sites are legal in Missouri?

Well, I’ve been doing a bit of digging and I’ve unearthed some real good news for you. Daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests have been legal in MO since August 2016. Whilst virtual currency powered social sportsbooks, which I’d argue are even better, are also within reach. So, I’m going to be banging on about the latter for the remainder of today’s guide.

What’s a social sportsbook, you wonder? Well, keep reading and all will be revealed.

Social sportsbooks in Missouri – what are they, exactly?

Social betting sites aren’t at all hard to get your head round. Put simply, they’re a lot like regular sportsbooks, except for the following all important differences:

  • Social sportsbooks don’t accept “real money” bets.
  • Instead, they’re powered entirely by virtual currencies.
  • Ordinarily, two virtual currency tiers are available – a just for fun one (often called Gold Coins), and a sweepstakes one (Sweeps Coins), the latter of which enables you to redeem your winnings for real world prizes, subject to playthrough requirements and minimum prize redemption rules.
  • All social betting sites run on a no purchase necessary basis, with free to claim bonuses offered left, right and center.
  • Social sportsbooks are much more widely available than real money ones in the US - and therefore super popular in states like MO, that don’t offer cash betting just yet.

If you’ve got any out of state buddies who’ve played at California’s sweepstakes casinos before, social betting brands are actually a lot like those sites, too – you’ll be able to choose between using either just for fun Gold Coins (GC) or sweepstakes style Sweeps Coins (SC) ahead of each play.

Although to be fair, social sportsbooks in Missouri do tend to get a little more creative with the names they like to give to their virtual currencies, as you’ll see soon enough from my comparison of the Show-Me State’s best social betting brands below – which I reckon are Thrillzz, Sportzino, Fliff, Kickr and Onyx Odds at the time of writing.

But before I get to all that, like an NFL coach in the locker room at half time, let me give you a quick pep talk on the pros and cons of betting with these entirely virtual currency based brands first…

Pros and cons of social sportsbooks in Missouri

Positive Aspects
  • Legal and widely available in MO.
  • No upfront purchase requirements.
  • Two social betting modes.
  • Redeem SC winnings for prizes.
Negative Aspects
  • No “real money” betting available.

Five social sportsbooks in Missouri worth checking out

As you can no doubt see, there are far more pros than cons when it comes to social betting in MO. There are two very, very different virtual currencies to choose from, for starters, as well as no upfront purchase requirements to grab a slice of the action, and the potential to redeem your SC winnings for IRL prizes so long as you can hit your preferred site’s playthrough and minimum redemption requirements first – which usually sit at 1x, and 45 to 100 SC, respectively, with most top brands.

Right now, the best social sportsbooks in Missouri are a doddle to pin down, too – because I’ve already shortlisted them for you folks right here.

In my book, Thrillzz, Sportzino, Fliff, Kickr and Onyx Odds are the best in the biz. Don’t believe me? Check out my comparison table below, which runs through the top sports markets, promos and features for the taking with each brand:

The best social sportsbooks in Missouri – a closer look

So, Kickr and Sportzino offer generous promos, Fliff and Thrillzz are great for mobile users, and Onyx Odds is ace for top tier odds on all-American sports and more – but which of these Missouri social sportsbooks is best for you?

Well, with all bettors being different, that’s a tough nut to crack, of course. But I’m hopeful the mini reviews I’ve put together for you below, which probe each brand’s offerings a bit deeper, will help you decide where’s best to drop your next virtual currency based bet:

Thrillzz – best for app based social betting

Positive Aspects
  • Highly rated social sportsbook app
  • 3,000 Thrillzz Coins + 3 Thrillzz Sweeps welcome offer
  • User-friendly interface
  • Always free to use
Negative Aspects
  • No desktop social sportsbook
Visit Thrillzz

Thrillzz is an app based social sportsbook that offers exceptional market coverage, with NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS and many, many more popular leagues for the taking.

On sign up, you can snag a 3,000 Thrillzz Coins and 3 Thrillzz Sweeps promo that’s about as versatile as Christian McCaffery in a Niners game – because it can be used for any sports picks you fancy.

Meanwhile, as is the case with most other social sportsbooks, there’s scope to opt into strictly non-mandatory Thrillzz Coins bundle purchases whenever you feel like it here – with free Thrillzz Sweeps (which can’t be bought outright on their own) usually thrown in as part of the deal.

Sportzino – best for promos

More than 30 different sports markets are up for grabs at Sportzino, making it one of the best social sportsbooks in Missouri for market coverage. But for me, it’s the brand’s sensational bonuses that make it really stand out from the crowd.

Register a first timer account from MO, and you can claim a whopping 170,000 GC and 7 SC for free within your first few days – and it’s nice to see the site’s virtual currencies going by no-nonsense, normal names here too, am I right?

I found that you’ll initially get 20,000 GC and 1 SC when you sign up and verify your email address. But the bonuses keep rolling in when you complete various mini tasks on the site, such as opting into SMS promo consent, or signing into your account daily during the promotional period, afterwards. Nice, huh?

Fliff – best for loyalty rewards

Positive Aspects
  • Daily bonuses and challenges
  • Excellent sports coverage and odds
  • Strong social and community features
Negative Aspects
  • No web-based predictions
Visit Fliff

Is Fliff a game changer, or more of a bench warmer? Well, I’ve been placing picks on their super user-friendly app for some time now, and I’m convinced it’s pretty darn revolutionary – particularly from a long term rewards standpoint.

Of course, all newbies can get a solid 1,000 Fliff Coins and 1 Fliff Cash promo on signup. But I found it later along the road that Fliff really comes into its own, offering free Fliff Coins reloads every two hours, a refer a friend program and a stellar loyalty program to boot.

Their app itself is ace to use, too – it resembles what you’ll find with a lot of top New Jersey sportsbooks, with hundreds of betting options on the table. In recent years, it’s stacked up 4.8-star ratings averages on the App Store and Google Play, too, which in my book says a lot.

Kickr – best for major American sports leagues

Positive Aspects
  • Free Bits and Bucks for new players
  • Several free promos for existing players
  • Exclusive VIP program
Negative Aspects
  • No live chat
Visit Kickr

When it comes to Missouri’s top social sportsbooks of the minute, Kickr is my top pick for major leagues, on account of its epic coverage of big time all-American markets.

NFL, NBA, MLB and all the usual suspects are available with epic numbers over here. While you’ll also find top odds on motorsports, soccer events, Formula 1 and MMA, too – with all new registrants able to claim a generous 150,000 Bits and 4 Bucks promo on registration day.

The only real downside over here? There aren’t any live or in-play social betting options up for grabs here in MO at the time of writing, unfortunately.

Onyx Odds – best for dead competitive odds

Positive Aspects
  • Free sports picks and predictions
  • VIP program for existing users
  • Low minimum Onyx Cash prize redemption
Negative Aspects
  • Not available in some US states
Visit Onyx Odds

Time and again, I’ve found that Onyx Odds knocks it out of the park with its epic numbers, which seem to be consistently competitive across essential markets like the NFL, MLB and NBA.

If value’s important to you, it’s one of the best social sportsbooks in Missouri by a mile, then – even despite the brand’s latest free to claim bonus not including any sweepstakes style Onyx Cash at the time of writing.

Another strong point over here is Onyx Odds’ best in class usability – lines are crystal clear to read here even if you’re a total beginner. While the brand’s social sportsbook is entirely web based, yet still mobile friendly, meaning no fiddly download requirements to get started.

How to register with one of Missouri’s social sportsbooks

Getting yourself set up with a top social sportsbook in Missouri is a cinch. And I’m going to show you how right here, right now.

Long story short, you can sign up with any one of the five brands I reviewed above by following these easy steps:

  1. Click my official banner link for your preferred brand – this’ll take you to their MO website.
  2. Tap the “Sign Up” or “Register” button – which will be obviously labelled from their homepage.
  3. Enter your name, email address and DOB – MO has a minimum sweepstakes age of 18+, but watch out here, as some social sportsbooks may set their own 21+ rule.
  4. Accept the site’s T&Cs and Privacy Policy.
  5. Verify yourself – usually via either an email or SMS authentication code.
  6. Sign into your account with your new details.
  7. Receive your bonus and start social betting.

Much as you’ll find with Pennsylvania sportsbooks and other brands, no two social betting sites are ever totally alike, T&Cs wise. So, it’s important to have a good read through your preferred social sportsbook’s MO centric rules before you get stuck in.

I’d also make a point of preparing some photo ID and proof of address pre-signup, too – as most social sportsbooks will want to carry out some simple Know Your Customer (KYC) checks before you opt into any GC bundle purchases or request your first SC prize redemption.

Said checks, which can usually be kicked off from your account page at any time, can sometimes take 24 to 48 hours to complete, so I’d advise getting all your stuff submitted as soon as you can after registering, yeah?

Conclusion – try out these top social sportsbooks in Missouri today

So, your standard “real money” sportsbooks in Missouri are about as off limits as a linebacker texting your playbook to the other team. But don’t fear, because virtual currency powered social sportsbooks make for great alternatives - and Missourians like yourselves have access to five truly fantastic ones at the time of writing.

Thrillzz shines bright with its user-friendly app and excellent market coverage, while Sportzino and Fliff are ideal if you’re more into multi-leg promos or loyalty rewards, respectively. Meanwhile, Kickr takes the cake for major league market access, while Onyx Odds is more than worth a whirl if locking in the internet’s best numbers is your top priority.

Right here, right now, you can register with any one of these brands from MO using my banner links on this page. Just make a point of reading up on how your preferred site’s virtual currency system works before you start piecing together your first social bets.
