Boston College is coming off a heartbreaking loss
The Boston College Eagles (1-1; 2-0 ATS; O/U 2-0) cruised past the FCS Fordham Rams 66-10 in Week 1. The Eagles racked up 555 total yards, going 12-for-18 on third down, and sophomore QB Dylan Lonergan led the way, throwing for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Senior QB Grayson James tossed for 190 yards and a TD in relief, and senior WR Lewis Bond had 11 receptions for 138 yards.
Last week, the Eagles suffered a 42-40 double-overtime loss at Michigan State. They outgained the Spartans 457-380 in total yards, but it wasn’t enough. Lonergan threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns, Bond had 11 catches for 90 yards, while senior TE Jeremiah Franklin posted eight receptions for 84 yards and a TD.
“A lot of positives, but then the negatives are why we lost the game,” said Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien. “They did a better job of having more positive plays than we did. We had a lot of positive plays, but they had more. In a game like that, that’s why you lose or you win.”
The Eagles’ ground game has struggled over the last couple of weeks. Boston College rushed for 97 yards against Fordham, and the Eagles were held to 67 yards by Michigan State. Sophomore RB Turbo Richard posted 13 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown against the Spartans. He also had seven catches for 66 yards and a TD in Week 2.
“We’re not going to be able to throw the ball 55 to 60 times a game,” O’Brien said. “I don’t think that’s a recipe for winning, so we’ve got to figure it out.”
Last year, the Eagles went 7-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play. They suffered a 20-15 defeat to Nebraska in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Eagles were scoring 28.2 points per game (tied for 67th in the nation) while yielding 23.8 points in return (53rd).
Stanford is off to a rough start
The Stanford Cardinal (0-2; 0-2 ATS; O/U 0-2 opened the season with a 23-20 road loss against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on August 23. Stanford kept the ball in possession for 36:07 but racked up just 286 total yards. Senior QB Ben Gulbranson completed just 15 of his 30 passing attempts, throwing for 109 yards and an interception, while sophomore RB Micah Ford led the way with 26 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Last week, the Cardinal visited the BYU Cougars. Stanford suffered a 27-3 loss, tallying just 161 total yards on the night. The Cardinal lost the turnover battle 3-0 and went just 2-for-13 on third down. Gulbranson tossed for 142 yards and two interceptions, while Ford rushed 12 times for a paltry 21 yards.
“They did a good job in the run game,” Stanford coach Frank Reich said. “We got to be better there. If we’re going to be a successful team and for us to win games, we have to have a balanced offense. We’ll make the improvements there.”
Stanford hired Reich on a one-year deal in the offseason. The Cardinal fired Troy Taylor after reports of mistreating staff. Under Taylor, the Cardinal went 3-9 overall and 2-6 in ACC play last season. Stanford was tallying 22.8 points per game (106th in the nation) while giving up 33.7 points in return (116th).
Boston College vs. Stanford Pick
Spread Pick for Boston College vs. Stanford
- Boston College -12.5 (5 units)
Frank Reich wants a balanced offense, but that looks impossible with Ben Gulbranson under center. At some point, Reich will have to make some changes. Until that happens, I can only bet against Stanford.
The Cardinals’ offense has struggled a lot thus far. It’s a small sample size, but Stanford obviously has serious issues moving the chains. On the other side, Boston College certainly has to improve its rushing, but the Eagles’ passing game looks strong.
The Eagles have enough firepower to slow the Cardinals’ rushing and hurt Stanford’s secondary. I expect Boston College to beat the number. The Eagles are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games overall.
Over/Under Pick for Boston College vs. Stanford
- Over 44.5 (5 units)
I won’t be surprised if the Cardinal decide to make some changes midway through this game. The Eagles’ defense has some flaws, especially in the secondary, and Frank Reich needs to find them.
Boston College will continue to lean on its passing game. I don’t think the Cardinal are capable of slowing the Eagles down. Hereof, I will take the over.
The Eagles have scored 108 points over the last two weeks. They’ve allowed at least 21 in seven of their previous eight outings, and each of those eight contests has gone over the total.
