By: Al MacMillan Updated 07/23/2026, 01:13 PM ET

Edmonton and Saskatchewan meet Thursday night in one of the biggest early-season games on the CFL schedule, with first place in the West Division on the line at Mosaic Stadium. The Elks enter at 5-1 after consecutive wins, while the defending Grey Cup champion Roughriders are 4-1 and coming off a bye following a dominant 38-7 victory over Hamilton. The teams have been remarkably close statistically, setting up a matchup that could be much tighter than the point spread suggests.

Quick Picks and Prediction

  • Spread Pick: Edmonton Elks +4.5
  • Total Pick: Under 57.5
  • Projected Final Score: Saskatchewan 28, Edmonton 27

Odds and Line Movement

Opening Odds

Market Edmonton Saskatchewan

Total Over 58.5 Under 58.5

Saskatchewan opened as approximately a four-point home favorite with the total at 58.5.

Current Odds

Market Edmonton Saskatchewan
Moneyline +170 -222
Spread +4.5 (-114) -4.5 (-114)
Total Over 57.5 (-106) Under 57.5 (-122)

The current reference market has Saskatchewan laying 4.5 points, with the total down to 57.5. Prices vary between sportsbooks, with other books still showing totals closer to 58.5, so bettors should shop before placing a wager.

Line Movement - Spread

Market Opening Current Movement
Edmonton +4 +4.5 +0.5 toward Edmonton
Saskatchewan -4 -4.5 -0.5 toward Saskatchewan

Line Movement - Total

Market Opening Current Reference Movement
Total 58.5 57.5 Down 1 point

The spread adjustment has been relatively modest, with Saskatchewan moving from around -4 to -4.5. The more noticeable shift has come on the total at some books, where the number has moved down from the 58.5 opener. That makes sense in a matchup featuring an Edmonton defense allowing only 23 points per game and a Roughriders defense that has been one of the league's best at preventing explosive plays.

Elks vs Roughriders Key Matchups and Handicap

Edmonton Quarterback and Run Game

Cody Fajardo has given the Elks exactly the kind of veteran quarterback play they needed during their 5-1 start. He has completed 70 percent of his passes for 1,781 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, while Edmonton is averaging 405.3 yards of offence per game. The more important matchup may be on the ground, where the Elks average 118.3 rushing yards per game and 5.8 yards per carry. Justin Rankin has already produced 522 rushing yards and six touchdowns, giving Edmonton a legitimate way to control possession and keep Saskatchewan's offence on the sideline.

That rushing attack is one of the biggest reasons Edmonton is attractive with more than a field goal. Road underdogs generally need to avoid becoming one-dimensional, and the Elks have shown they can generate offence without asking Fajardo to throw 40 or 50 times. Saskatchewan has allowed 101.8 rushing yards per game, so Edmonton should have opportunities to stay balanced and shorten the game.

Saskatchewan Passing Attack

Trevor Harris has been one of the CFL's most efficient quarterbacks through the opening portion of the season. He has completed 71.9 percent of his passes for 1,629 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he has thrown multiple touchdown passes in every game. Saskatchewan is averaging 421.8 yards and 34 points per contest, giving the Roughriders the more explosive offensive profile entering Thursday night.

KeeSean Johnson, Kian Schaffer-Baker and Samuel Emilus give Harris multiple reliable targets, which makes this a significant test for an Edmonton secondary that has been creating turnovers at an extraordinary rate. The Elks have recorded 10 interceptions over their last three games, including four in each of their last two contests. Saskatchewan's ability to protect the football may ultimately determine whether the Riders can create the separation necessary to cover a spread above four points.

Roughriders Second-Down Edge

One of Saskatchewan's biggest statistical advantages has come on second down. The Roughriders lead the CFL with a 60.2 percent second-down conversion rate while their defense is allowing opponents to convert only 42.1 percent of the time, also the best mark in the league. KeeSean Johnson leads the CFL with 16 second-down conversion receptions.

That efficiency is a major reason Saskatchewan has consistently sustained drives and scored at least 27 points in every game. Edmonton cannot rely exclusively on takeaways to get off the field. If Harris consistently converts second-and-medium situations, Saskatchewan can control possession and force the Elks into a higher-scoring game than they would prefer.

Elks Turnover Advantage

Edmonton leads the CFL with a +11 turnover ratio, and that number has become central to its early-season success. The Elks produced 17 points directly off interceptions in their 40-17 victory over Ottawa before intercepting four more passes against BC in a 19-17 win.

Turnovers can be volatile from week to week, which makes it dangerous to assume Edmonton will continue forcing interceptions at the same rate. Still, the underlying defensive performance is legitimate enough to keep the Elks competitive. Edmonton has allowed only 23 points per game, and its ability to limit rushing production gives the defense a chance to create predictable passing situations.

Edmonton has been one of the CFL's strongest early-season teams both straight up and against market expectations. The Elks are 5-1 overall and have won two of their first three road games. Saskatchewan is 4-1 and has also gone 2-1 in its first three home games, reinforcing how little separation there has been between these teams through the first two months of the season.

The recent head-to-head history also supports taking the points. Edmonton and Saskatchewan split their two meetings last season, with only one point separating their combined scoring across the season series. Edmonton has gone 3-2 in its last five trips to Mosaic Stadium, and the two losses were decided by a combined four points.

The total is more complicated because Saskatchewan is averaging 34 points per game, but Edmonton has shown it can drag opponents into lower-scoring games. The Elks held BC to 17 points last week, and Saskatchewan enters with a defense allowing only nine explosive plays, the fewest in the CFL. A competitive game in which Edmonton leans on Rankin and tries to control possession gives the under a realistic path.

Key Injuries and Notes - EDM and SSK

Edmonton enters the matchup with some concerns along the offensive line. Carter O'Donnell and linebacker Tyron Vrede were among the notable players dealing with injuries during the week, while Brett Boyko, Royce Metchie and Brock Mogensen also appeared on the injury report. Any reduction in Edmonton's offensive-line depth matters against a Saskatchewan defensive front that has already generated 11 sacks through five games.

Saskatchewan has dealt with its own absences, but the defense receives a significant reinforcement with Rolan Milligan Jr. returning to the lineup. Nelson Lokombo and Mathew Sexton were among the players dealing with injuries entering the game. Milligan's return gives Saskatchewan another experienced playmaker in the secondary for a matchup against his former teammate Fajardo.

The Roughriders also enter Thursday under extraordinarily difficult circumstances following the death of team captain Jayden Dalke. There is no responsible way to quantify how such a loss will affect a team's performance, so it should not be treated as a conventional handicapping angle.

ATS and Total Picks

  • Spread Pick: Edmonton Elks +4.5 - Saskatchewan deserves to be favored at home, but more than four points looks generous in a matchup between two teams that have been extremely close statistically. Edmonton owns the league's best turnover differential, has the running game required to travel well and has repeatedly played competitive football at Mosaic Stadium. The Roughriders may win, but the Elks have enough defensive resistance and offensive balance to keep the margin inside one score.
  • Total Pick: Under 57.5 - Saskatchewan's offensive numbers make an under uncomfortable, but the matchup has several ingredients for a slower game. Edmonton averages nearly 120 rushing yards per contest and should have every incentive to keep Harris off the field. The Elks are allowing only 23 points per game, while Saskatchewan has been excellent at preventing explosive plays. The total has already shown downward movement at some books, and a game played in the mid-50s is the most likely script.

Final Score Prediction

Saskatchewan 28, Edmonton 27. The Roughriders use their second-down efficiency and home-field advantage to manufacture one late scoring drive, but Edmonton's running game and opportunistic defense prevent Saskatchewan from pulling away. Fajardo keeps the Elks within striking distance throughout the night, Saskatchewan survives the first meeting of this home-and-home series, Edmonton covers the spread and the final score stays below 57.5.

How to Bet Elks vs Roughriders

Edmonton +4.5 is the preferred side because the number gives bettors protection in a matchup that projects much closer to a one-score game than a comfortable Saskatchewan victory. The under 57.5 also fits the expected game script, with Edmonton likely trying to establish Rankin, control possession and limit the number of opportunities Harris receives.
