The Cubs’ shaky form continues
The Chicago Cubs extended their losing streak to three games following Monday’s defeat against the Braves. The Cubbies mustered just five hits on the night, and Shota Imanaga picked up a loss, giving up three earned runs in the bottom of the first.
Chicago has gone 5-5 over its previous 10 games overall. During that stretch, the Cubs have scored 48 runs on a .239/.322/.430 triple-slash, while their bullpen has compiled a 5.26 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and a .264 batting average against. The Cubbies held the top wild card in the National League on Tuesday morning, two games above the Padres.
Javier Assad is expected to take the mound at Truist Park on Wednesday night. The 28-year-old right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in five starts (25.1 innings pitched) this season. Last Friday, Assad emerged victorious in an 11-5 win to the Nationals, allowing four earned runs on three hits and two walks across 5.1 innings of work.
Assad is 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in three career starts and two relief appearances against Atlanta. The current Braves are 15-for-61 with four home runs against Assad.
The Braves hope for another gem from Chris Sale
The Atlanta Braves snapped a two-game skid with that 4-1 victory over the Cubs. Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies slugged a solo home run each, while Bryce Elder took a win, throwing 6.1 frames of a one-run ball.
The Braves have gone 4-6 in their previous 10 games overall. They’ve scored just 32 runs on a .238/.285/.372 slash line during that stretch, while the Braves bullpen has recorded a pedestrian 6.03 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a .263 batting average against.
Chris Sale is projected to get the starting call on Wednesday, and the 36-year-old left-hander carries a 5-4 record with a sharp 2.38 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 17 starts (102 IP) in 2025. Last Friday, Sale tossed 6.2 innings in a no-decision against the Mariners, allowing one earned run on four hits.
Sale is 3-1 with a sparkling 0.93 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in four career starts and two relief appearances against the Cubs. The current Cubbies are 19-for-72 with three doubles and three home runs against Sale.
Cubs vs. Braves Pick
Moneyline Pick for Cubs vs. Braves
- Atlanta Braves (4 units)
The Braves have nothing to play for, but they certainly stand a chance of beating the Cubs in this game. The Cubs have done a decent job against the left-handed pitchers in the last 10 days (.760 OPS and 114 wRC+). However, Chris Sale is not an ordinary lefty.
Sale is still one of the best pitchers in baseball. He hasn’t allowed more than a run in eight straight starts. Last season, Sale threw seven scoreless innings in a winning effort against the Cubs, allowing just two hits.
On the other side, Javier Assad has allowed seven earned runs over his last two starts. The Braves have been awful against the righties in the last 10 days (.541 OPS and 54 wRC+), but they could easily get things going when they face Assad.
Over/Under Pick for Cubs vs. Braves
- Under (4 units)
Although both bullpens have struggled lately, I will take the under on the total. The reason is Chris Sale, and I expect the veteran lefty to dominate the Cubs. Javier Assad should be able to avoid a meltdown and help the under backers.
Last week, the Cubs outlasted the Braves 7-6 in 10 innings in the opening game of their three-game series in Chicago. The Cubs edged the Braves 4-3 in the middle game, and Atlanta avoided a sweep with a 5-1 victory in the closer.
Should Sale continue to pitch at a high level, the Braves will use their best relievers down the stretch.
