The Sky continue to struggle
The Chicago Sky have only won one of their previous seven games overall. After stopping a four-game losing streak with an 88-64 home victory over the Connecticut Sun, the Sky have dropped consecutive road games against the Indiana Fever 97-77 and the Las Vegas Aces 80-66.
The Sky didn’t stand a chance against the Aces, though Chicago covered a 17-point spread. Interestingly, the entire Chicago starting five scored in double digits, but nobody surpassed a 12-point line. Angel Reese (14.7 PPG, 12.6 RPG) was only suspended for the first half due to detrimental comments, but she ended up sitting out of the entire game with a back injury.
Ariel Atkins also missed Sunday’s clash against the Aces and is considered day-to-day. The Sky have nothing to play for and can be cautious with their best players. Chicago is 12th in the WNBA, a game and a half ahead of the Dallas Wings.
The Aces are red-hot
The Las Vegas Aces extended their winning streak to 14 games following Sunday’s victory over the Sky. Their last defeat came on August 2, when the Minnesota Lynx humiliated the Aces 111-58 in Las Vegas. During that 14-game stretch, the Aces have gone 10-4 against the spread.
The Aces cruised past the Sky last Sunday. Las Vegas led from start to finish and by as many as 25 points. The Aces shot 45.7% from the field (10-for-34 from deep), and A’ja Wilson led the charge with 31 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks.
Las Vegas is tied with the Atlanta Dream for the No. 2 seed in the WNBA. They are just one game ahead of the No. 4 Phoenix Mercury. Should the Aces win their final two games of the regular season, they will clinch the No. 2 seed.
Sky vs. Aces Pick
Spread Pick for Sky vs. Aces
- Aces -17.5 (5 units)
The Aces will dominate the Sky once more, even if both Angel Reese and Ariel Atkins return. Las Vegas has figured it out on both sides of the ball, and the Aces have been unstoppable lately. The Sky won’t be able to cope with A’ja Wilson, who has surpassed a 30-point mark in seven of his last nine games.
Chicago is one of the worst offensive teams in the WNBA. The Sky committed nine more turnovers than the Aces last Sunday, and I expect more of the same in their final meeting of the season. The Aces’ defense has improved a lot since that heavy loss to the Lynx in August.
Over/Under Pick for Sky vs. Aces
- Under 159.5 (5 units)
As I mentioned, the Aces’ defense has improved a lot lately. Las Vegas has allowed 75 or fewer points in five of its previous seven games overall, and five of those seven contests have gone under the total.
The Sky are dead last in the WNBA in points scored per game (75.9). They rank 12th in 2-point percentage (46.7%), 10th in pace (76.9 possessions per 40 minutes), and ninth in 3-point percentage (33.0%).
Chicago will struggle to score enough to push the total over the line in this game. The under has hit in five of the Sky’s last six games overall.
