Chicago and Cleveland continue their three-game series at Progressive Field, and Friday’s opener has been excluded from the analysis. They will close down a 13-game regular-season series on Sunday, and the Guardians have won eight of their first 10 games against the White Sox this season.

The White Sox are hot
The Chicago White Sox have won their last three series. After sweeping a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins, the White Sox have taken two out of three games from the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.

Chicago is slashing a sturdy .267/.344/.457 with 14 home runs in September (348 at-bats). The White Sox’s pitching staff has amassed a 4.04 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a .240 batting average against so far this month, while their bullpen has accounted for a 3.35 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.
Davis Martin is projected to take the mound at Progressive Field on Saturday. The 28-year-old right-hander carries a 6-9 record with a 4.03 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 22 starts and one relief appearance (127.1 innings pitched) in 2025. Last Sunday, Martin threw 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Tigers, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks.
Martin is 1-2 with an ugly 7.71 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in three career starts against Cleveland. He’ll meet the Guardians for the second time this season. Last month, Martin threw five innings of a three-run ball in a 6-4 home win over Cleveland. The current Guardians are 12-for-39 with a double and two home runs against Martin.
The Guardians continue to chase the wild card
The Cleveland Guardians have won their last two series, taking three out of four from the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals. The Guardians were 3.5 games behind the final wild-card spot in the American League on Friday morning.
Cleveland is hitting .257/.324/.416 with 12 home runs in September (370 at-bats). The Guardians’ pitching staff has done a great job so far this month, posting a 3.09 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a .249 batting average against, while Cleveland’s bullpen has recorded a 3.38 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Parker Messick is expected to get the starting call on Saturday. The 24-year-old rookie left-hander is 2-0 with a shiny 1.93 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in four starts and 23.1 innings of work this season. Last Sunday, Messick tossed six innings of a one-run ball in a 2-1 road victory against the Rays.
Messick will meet the White Sox for the first time in his career. He doesn’t throw hard (21st percentile in fastball velocity) but effectively uses five pitches.
White Sox vs. Guardians Pick
Moneyline Pick for White Sox vs. Guardians
- Cleveland Guardians (4 units)
The Guardians know Davis Martin well and have a solid record against him. Martin hasn’t been at his best lately, posting a 4.50 ERA and 5.59 FIP over his last four starts, so I’m backing the Guardians to come out on top. Cleveland has recorded a .713 OPS and 100 wRC+ against the right-handed pitchers so far this month.
The White Sox look more dangerous when hitting the righties. They own a 131 wRC+ against the righties and a 99 wRC+ against the lefties in September. Hereof, I’m backing Parker Messick to fare well in this matchup.
Over/Under Pick for White Sox vs. Guardians
- Under (4 units)
The Guardians lean on their pitching staff. Cleveland has won seven of its previous nine games, and the Guardians have only allowed 17 runs during that stretch. Interestingly, the Guardians have scored fewer than five runs in eight of their last 12 wins.
I don’t expect to see a lot of runs at Progressive Field on Saturday, even though I don’t trust Davis Martin. Cleveland’s lineup is not elite, and should the Guardians win, their pitching staff will lead the way. The White Sox could easily struggle to get to Parker Messick.
