The Reds are desperate for wins
The Cincinnati Reds mustered just six hits at Sutter Health Park last Friday and failed to score for the first time since August 25, when they lost 7-0 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Reds fell to 74-73 on the season following Friday’s 3-0 loss in Sacramento. They were just 1.5 games behind the final wild card in the National League on Saturday morning.

The Reds are slashing an underwhelming .237/.304/.385 with 10 home runs in September. Their bullpen has thrown 35 innings so far this month while posting a pedestrian 6.43 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and a .283 batting average against.
Nick Lodolo will toe the slab at Sutter Health Park on Sunday afternoon. The 27-year-old left-hander is 8-7 with a sturdy 3.10 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 25 starts (139.1 innings pitched) this season. He pitched five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Padres last Monday, allowing just two hits and a walk.
Lodolo will face the Athletics for the second time in his career. He met them once in 2023 and gave up three earned runs on five hits across five innings of work in a no-decision. Just three guys from this A’s team have seen Lodolo before, combining for a single, a double, and a home run in seven at-bats.

The A’s are sitting bottom of the AL West
The Athletics hit three solo home runs last Friday to see off the Reds’ challenge. Carlos Cortes slugged two of those three dingers, and the A’s advanced to 68-80 on the season. They were 12 games behind the final wild-card spot in the American League on Saturday morning.
The A’s are slashing a strong .246/.335/.479 with 17 round-trippers in September. Their bullpen has tossed 37.2 frames so far this month while notching a solid 3.11 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a .197 batting average against.
Luis Morales will be on the bump for the Athletics on Sunday, and the 22-year-old rookie right-hander carries a 3-1 record with a sharp 2.73 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in six starts and one relief appearance (33 IP) in 2025. He struggled last Monday, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and a walk through 4.2 innings in a 7-0 loss to the Red Sox.
Morales has been outstanding through his first six major league outings. He has four pitches in his arsenal and ranks in the 90th percentile in fastball velocity.
Reds vs. Athletics Pick
Moneyline Pick for Reds vs. Athletics
- Athletics (5 units)
The Athletics are way more dangerous when hitting the righties. Their lineup is arguably better than the Reds’, but the A’s have struggled against the lefties this month, tallying a .695 OPS and 89 wRC+. Hereof, Nick Lodolo is poised for another strong outing. Lodolo has only allowed eight earned runs on 24 hits and four walks over his previous seven starts and 38.2 innings of work.
On the other side, the Reds own a troublesome .675 OPS and 82 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers in September. Luis Morales should be able to bounce back from that rough performance against the Red Sox. The Reds’ relief pitching doesn’t breed confidence, so I’m going with the Athletics.
Over/Under Pick for Reds vs. Athletics
- Under 9.5 (5 units)
I expect a strong performance from the starting duo, so give me the under on the total. As I noted, Nick Lodolo has been pitching lights out lately, and Luis Morales is off to a strong start to his MLB career.
Excluding the middle game of this series, each of the Reds’ last seven contests has produced runs in single digits. Cincinnati leans on its strong starting rotation and desperately needs more from its offense. On the other side, seven of the Athletics’ previous nine games overall have seen nine or fewer runs on the scoreboard.
