The Zips led by as many as 23 points and never trailed, holding the Golden Flashes to 28 percent shooting, including 1-for-23 (4%) from three. Kent State dominated on the boards (+13 rebounding margin and 24 offensive rebounds), but couldn't find the bottom of the net.

Akron trails undefeated Miami (OH) by just one game in the Mid-American Conference standings. The 9-1 Zips' only MAC loss was against the RedHawks, as they've won eight straight since.Β KenPom ranks Akron 52nd nationally, including 32nd in offensive efficiency and 129th in defensive efficiency. The Zips average 91.5 points per game (6th) on 51.4 percent shooting (6th), including 38.1 percent from three-point distance (20th). They also knock down 76.4 percent of their free throws (45th). Akron surrenders 74.5 points per game (159th), and its opponents shoot 42.0 percent from the field (78th), including 33.1 percent from beyond the arc (162nd).

Senior guard Tavari Johnson leads Akron in scoring at 20.3 points per game. He shoots 54.4 percent from the floor and averages 5.5 assists per game. A few other Zips to watch on Tuesday against Eastern Michigan are senior forward Amani Lyles (15.2 PPG and 7.4 RPG), senior guard Shammah Scott (13.1 PPG and 2.9 APG), and senior guard Evan Mahaffey (9.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 3.6 APG).

Akron Zips Injury Report:

  • No injuries to report.

Eastern Michigan is an inefficient offensive team

Eastern Michigan (9-13 SU, 15-16 ATS, and 6-15 O/U) lost 70-67 to UMass on Saturday, covering the spread as 8.5-point underdogs. The Eagles never led by more than one point, as they committed 14 turnovers (seven more than the Minutemen) and shot 23 percent from three-point distance. UMass attempted 17 more free throws than Eastern Michigan and outscored the Eagles 42-30 in the paint.

EMU is tied for 10th in the MAC standings with a 3-7 conference record. The Eagles, who have lost four straight, are 3-7 in their last ten games, but covered the spread eight times. KenPom ranks Eastern Michigan 223rd in the nation, including 262nd in offensive efficiency and 154th in defensive efficiency. The Eagles average 74.9 points per game (265th) on 44.6 percent shooting (223rd), including 32.4 percent from beyond the arc (270th). EMU gives up 76.5 points per game (211th), and its opponents shoot 44.0 percent from the field (209th), including 32.6 percent from long distance (137th).

Freshman forward Mohammad Habhab paces the Eagles in scoring at 14.3 points per game on 39.9 percent from the field. He also contributes 8.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. A few other Eagles to watch against Akron are senior forward Addison Patterson (12.9 PPG and 5.2 RPG), senior guard Jon Sanders II (6.7 PPG), and senior guard Mak Manciel (5.9 PPG).

Eastern Michigan Eagles Injury Report:

  • Senior guard Carlos Hart (13.1 PPG and 5.3 RPG in 18 games) is no longer with the program.

Akron vs. Eastern Michigan Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Akron vs. Eastern Michigan

  • Zips -12.5 (4 Units)

The Eagles have managed to cover the spread often despite losing seven of their last ten straight-up, but I don't envision that trend continuing on Tuesday. The Zips dominated the first matchup, scoring nearly as many points in the paint (70) as the Eagles scored as a team (72). EMU isn't likely to play better defensively in that department tomorrow, either. Akron ranks 58th nationally in near-proximity shooting percentage and 12th in two-point shooting percentage, while Eastern ranks outside the top 150 in two-point defense. The Zips are also deadly from three-point range.

On the other end of the court, EMU will be contested by an Akron defense ranked 13th in Haslametrics' Defensive Momentum metric. The visitors significantly outperformed their projected defensive efficiency rating in three of their last four games, and will continue that streak on Tuesday. They held Eastern Michigan under 40 percent overall (26% from three-point range) in the first matchup.

Over/Under Pick for Akron vs. Eastern Michigan

  • Under 153 (4 Units)

If Akron plays at the level it has in the last few games, I expect the Eagles' offense to struggle to hit the 70-point mark. EMU is already an inefficient, slow-tempo team, ranking outside the top-250 in offensive efficiency and schedule-adjusted tempo, per KenPom. They rarely score second-chance buckets, and they rank 283rd in free-throw rate, as well. Their offensive liabilities will allow the Zips to cover the spread, but I don't expect the visitors to score enough to push the total over the number. Akron will dominate inside, but it isn't likely to replicate its absurd 70-point performance inside the paint. The Zips also rarely get to the foul line (335th in FT rate). With this game unlikely to be competitive, expect Akron to coast late in the second half, keeping the total under 153.
