Alabama Looking to Start Year 2-0

Alabama rolled past North Dakota at home in their season opener and now looks to pick up a victory over a ranked opponent on the road here. The Crimson Tide put together a solid offensive showing against the Fighting Hawks and now heads up the East Coast to the Big Apple. Against North Dakota, Alabama never trailed in the game as they scored the first five points of the contest. The Crimson Tide saw the lead trimmed to 10-9 but reeled off the next nine points to take a 10-point advantage. Alabama was up 16 at the half, opened the second half on an 11-2 run and cruised the rest of the way to the win.

In the game, Alabama shot 53.4% from the field, including eight of 27 from three-point range, won the rebounding battle 46-26 and held North Dakota to 38.7% shooting in the game. The Crimson Tide has to do a better job taking care of the ball as they committed 15 turnovers in the contest. Labaron Philon Jr. led Alabama with 22 points and eight assists in the win. Houston Mallette contributed 15 points plus eight rebounds while Amari Allen (seven rebounds, five assists, three steals) and London Jemison each added 12 in the win.

Aden Holloway (wrist) and Keitenn Bristow (ankle) are both questionable for this contest.

Red Storm Seeking Early Season Signature Win

St. John’s opened their season on a positive note as they trounced Quinnipiac at home Monday night as they kicked off the year on a positive note. The Red Storm now hosts a ranked opponent as they try to remain unbeaten while picking up an early signature win. Against Quinnipiac, St. John’s jumped to a 13-2 lead with 16:36 to play in the first half and cruised the rest of the way. The Red Storm rolled to a 54-34 advantage at the half. They never let the Bobcats closer than 16 the rest of the way while leading by as many as 45 as they rolled to the one-sided victory with plenty of garbage time.

The Red Storm shot 56.5% from the floor, including eight of 19 from three-point range, and controlled the glass by a 45-35 margin. St. John’s forced 22 turnovers, controlled fast break points by a 44-16 margin and dominated points in the paint by a 60-32 margin. Dillon Mitchell led the Red Storm with 18 points and seven rebounds as one of five players in double figures in the win. Zuby Ejiofor chipped in 17 points plus six boards, Ian Jackson put up 15 points, Joson Sanon added 14 off the bench and Sadiku Ibine Ayo kicked in 10 in the win. If Bryce Hopkins (three of five, eight points, four rebounds, five assists) continues to improve, Rick Pitino will have a deep rotation to work with this season.

Alabama vs. St. John’s Pick

Alabama vs. St. John’s Spread Pick

  • John’s -5.5 (4 units)

Both teams come in off one-sided victories in their season openers and take the floor in a showdown of ranked foes in this contest. The Crimson Tide was sloppy in their win over North Dakota and is going to deal with a Red Storm squad that has plenty of depth in their rotation. While Alabama was 9-3 on the road last season, they’re facing a St. John’s team that was a sparkling 18-0 at home last season (21-0 if you count the Big East Tournament, which was played here at MSG) and has plenty of familiarity with playing here. Look for the Red Storm to take down the Crimson Tide here and maintain their unblemished record.

Alabama vs. St. John’s Over/Under Pick

  • Under 171.5 (4 units)

Last season, Alabama was fourth in offensive efficiency, 10th in effective field goal percentage (56.6%), 64th in offensive rebounding percentage (33.7%), 30th in free throw rate (.393 FT attempts per FG attempt), 3rd in two-point shooting (59.7%) and first in tempo with 75.3 possessions per game. St. John’s was 68th in offensive efficiency, 50th in turnover percentage (15.3%), 8th in offensive rebounding percentage (37.9%) and 179th in field goal percentage. The Red Storm pushes the pace, ranking 58th in adjusted tempo with 70 possessions a night. With that said, St. John’s was second in defensive efficiency, 8th in effective field goal percentage (45.9%), 19th in forced turnover percentage (21.4%) and 14th in field goal percentage defense (39.7%) on the year. The potential for a track meet is there but the Red Storm’s defense keeps this one short of the total.
