Sun Devils making a move
Bobby Hurley has done a lot of winning in his career, starting in high school, through Duke and then briefly in the NBA. He's Dan Hurley's older brother right now because his Arizona State teams have won just 27 games heading into this season. They've also combined to go 12-28 in their conference records between the Big 12 and Pac-12. This season, despite losses to USC and early to Gonzaga (77-65), the Sun Devils appear to be on the upswing after beating Oklahoma 86-70 as a 6-point dog and 73-48 as a 16-point favorite on Dec. 9.
KenPom has Arizona State ranked 70th, 65th in Adjusted Offense and 83rd in Adjusted Defensive Rating. Maurice Odom, a Pepperdine transfer, leads the Sun Devils with 17.2 points and 5.9 assists. Anthony Johnson adds 13.3 points and shoots 39% from long range.
Broncos could be dangerous in the WCC
Former Arizona State head coach Herb Sendek has one of the toughest jobs in the nation, and that's to try and unset Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference. That probably won't happen for Santa Clara in the regular season, but they can build their case for an at-large bid with a strong Net Rating, which means you'd better win some key games before conference play starts. They are ranked 50th right now, helped by wins over Xavier (87-68) and Minnesota (86-75).

The loss to New Mexico wasn't pretty as Santa Clara shot just 38% from the field and 23% (10-of-44) from long range. Christian Hammond had a strong game with 22 points and shot 7 of 14 from the field. The only key injury at the moment is to Jake Ensminger (6-9, 215), who is averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 assists per game. He's listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury. Hammond is a 6-4 sophomore guard, who averages 17.2 points per game and shoots 42.5% from the field.
Point spread Pick for Arizona State vs. Santa Clara
Santa Clara vs. Arizona State Pick and Prediction
- Santa Clara -2.5 (5 units)
There's a slight ACC connection with Sendek having coached at NC State in the late nineties and early 2000s, and of course, Hurley playing at Duke. Hurley took over for Sendek in 2015 when he was let go. There has to be some bitterness still there, but it's really about his team rebounding after a bad loss. This is the same team that beat Xavier on the road, which is not an easy place to play. Sendek's teams also routinely play strong defense, and that's the case for the Broncos, who hold teams to 29.9% from beyond the arc. That's important against ASU, who shoots it well (38.4%) from long range.
