Sun Devils have been a profitable team to back ATS

Arizona State (9-2 SU, 8-2-1 ATS, and 5-6 O/U) beat Santa Clara 82-79 on Saturday as two-point underdogs. Sparky trailed 55-38 at the half, but stormed out of the locker room to complete the comeback. They shot 55 percent from the floor, including 10-for-21 (48%) from beyond the arc, and scored 38 in the paint. The defense also showed off in the second half, holding the Broncos to 24 points.

The Sun Devils were 13-20 last season, finishing 4-16 inΒ Big 12 Conference competition (15th place). After the regular season, they were invited to participate in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, where they lost in the first round to Nebraska. ASU is led by 11th-year head coach Bobby Hurley, who has compiled a 173-152 record in Tempe. The 2025-26 Sun Devils squad was picked to finish 16th (last) in the Big 12's preseason poll.

Arizona State has a new-look roster for this season, with only two returnees. Hurley added one freshman and seven transfers this past offseason in an effort to get back over .500 and cool off his hot seat. Senior Pepperdine transfer guard Maurice Odum leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.7 points with 6.0 dimes per game. Two other Sun Devils are averaging double-digit points: senior guard Anthony Johnson (11.3 PPG and 3.3 APG) and 7-foot-1 frosh center Mor Massamba Diop (12.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and 1.5 BPG). A couple of other players to watch against UCLA are junior guard Bryce Ford (9.1 PPG) and sophomore forward Santiago Trouet (7.5 PPG and 5.9 RPG).

Arizona State Sun Devils Injury Report:

  • G Bryce Ford suffered an undisclosed injury on December 9 and missed the Sun Devils' last game. He's questionable to play against UCLA.

UCLA was competitive, but fell short against Zags

UCLA (7-3 SU, 3-6-1 ATS, and 5-5 O/U) lost 82-72 to Gonzaga on Saturday in Seattle, pushing as ten-point underdogs. The Bruins shot 49 percent overall and shot 47 percent from three-point range, but were outrebounded (-7 margin) and lost the turnover battle. Gonzaga shot 50 percent overall but kept the Bruins in the game by missing 12 free throws.

UCLA went 23-11 last season, including 13-7 in Big Ten Conference play. The Bruins are coached by Mick Cronin, who is in his seventh season at the helm of the program (145-67 record) after a successful stint coaching Cincinnati (296-147 in 13 seasons). The 2025-26 Bruins squad was picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten this season.

There's no shortage of talent taking the court for UCLA this year. The Bruins feature six players averaging between 9 and 16 points per game, and four of their top five scorers shoot at least 40 percent from three-point distance. Senior forward Tyler Bilodeau paces the team in scoring, averaging 16.6 points on 52.3 percent shooting with 4.6 rebounds per game. He also shoots over 80 percent at the foul line and 40 percent from beyond the arc. A few other Bruins to watch on Wednesday against their former Pac-12 rival, Arizona State, are senior guard Skyy Clark (12.2 PPG and 50.0 3PT%), senior guard Donovan Dent (12.0 PPG and 6.8 APG), and junior guard Eric Dailey Jr. (11.1 PPG and 5.1 RPG).

UCLA Bruins Injury Report:

  • No key injuries to report.

Arizona State vs. UCLA Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Arizona State vs. UCLA

  • Sun Devils +9.5 (5 Units)

I see a lot of value in ASU's side ATS, as I have this game projected to be a 5.5-point spread. The Bruins can score in bunches, but Sparky can keep up. The Sun Devils shoot 39.2 percent from three-point range, and the Bruins will let them shoot them (320th in opponent three-point attempt rate). ASU also ranks in the top 60 nationally in both near-proximity shooting percentage and second-chance conversion percentage off offensive rebounds. The Sun Devils will force their way to the free-throw line (25th in FT attempt rate) against UCLA (122nd in opponent FT rate), as well.

These former Pac-12 rivals are plenty familiar with each other. I believe that will result in a competitive game. Back Arizona State to cover at +9.5!

Over/Under Pick for Arizona State vs. UCLA

  • Over 146.5 (5 Units)

Betting Trend: The over is 8-2 in the previous ten matchups between ASU and UCLA.

I believe this total is too low considering how efficient the Bruins' offense is (29th nationally, per Haslametrics) and how competitive the Sun Devils will be. The home team ranks in the top 15 in both three-point percentage and near-proximity percentage, and the visitors have also performed at a high level. The visitors are also faster-paced (130th in schedule-adjusted tempo), which should encourage plenty of back-and-forth scoring action.
