BC Charged with Upset Defeat

The Boston College Eagles enter their fourth game of the season. Boston College endured a minor upset defeat in the opener. They were dealt an OT loss by FAU. They countered with a 76-47 home win against the Citadel and also covered the spread. Next, the Eagles were dealt a stunning 60-59 home defeat against Central Connecticut in a meeting that had the Eagles marked as huge 17-point favorites. They only connected on 32% of their shots. The Eagles have covered the spread in one of three games.

Donald Hand Jr. is back and ready to dominate. The junior guard was a big scorer last year, sinking 15.7 PPG, but was inconsistent at times. Hand Jr. scored 11 points in the win on Tuesday and has netted an average of 16.3 PPG on 31% shooting in three games. Chase Forte is in his first year with Boston College. The senior guard was a dominant player for South Dakota last season, posting 17.9 PPG. Forte scored nine points on Tuesday and is averaging 11.7 PPG and leads the team with 4.3 APG.

Boden Kapke has spent the past two seasons with Butler. The junior forward is receiving more playing time this year and is producing strong numbers, sinking an average of 8.7 PPG. Marko Radunovic is in his freshman season. The guard has averaged 5 PPG accompanied by 5.3 RPG. Jayden Hastings averaged 4 PPG last season. The sophomore forward has improved, averaging 7 PPG and 5.7 RPG.

The Eagles are ranked 105th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and were voted to finish in last place in the ACC preseason poll selected by the media. Boston College is averaging 71 points after three games, ranking them 325th. They are shooting 39.3% while keeping opponents to 37% shooting. The Eagles are conceding an average of 63.3 points, placing them 42nd.

Temple Posts Second Win of Season

The Temple Owls are eying their third win. It’s been a light schedule in the first two weeks to begin the season. Temple began the season with an 83-65 home win against Delaware State to cover the 16.5 point spread. Next, the Owls had nearly a week off before issuing a 69-62 home win against rival La Salle on Tuesday evening. Temple sank 50% of their shots in that one, while keeping the Explorers to a 37% mark. They were marked as 6.5-point favorites in that one.

Aiden Tobiason is in his second season with the Owls. The sophomore guard averaged about 5 PPG last year and is poised to improve. Tobiason has been a beast. He scored 23 points in the opener and 16 points in the win on Tuesday. He is shooting a dazzling 61%. Gavin Griffiths has spent time with Rutgers and Nebraska. He transferred to Temple in the offseason. The junior guard has netted a total of 26 points and 11 rebounds in two games.

Darrian Ford is another new player for the Owls. The junior guard has been sharp, sinking a total of 36 points on 56% shooting. Jordan Mason was a solid player for UIC last year, averaging 9.6 PPG. The senior guard has amassed 24 points and 11 assists in two games. AJ Smith was a key player for Charleston last season, posting 11.5 PPG. The senior guard has delivered 20 points on a 57% efficiency.

The Owls are ranked 110th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and were selected to finish in ninth place in the A10 preseason poll chosen the the coaches. Temple is averaging 86.5 points in two games, marking them 199th. They have converted on 52% of their shots. The Owls have kept their two opponents to 40.7% shooting. Spread Pick for BC vs. Temple

  • Boston College Eagles +3.5 (5 units)

The Boston College Eagles dropped their first game in OT against FAU and answered by winning by 29 points before a loss on Tuesday. The Temple Owls are also 2-0, but it's been easy. They are ranked 345th in strength of schedule after two games. The Owls are not a contending team in the AAC this season. They are expected to be in the bottom half of the conference.

Furthermore, Boston College is the superior defensive team here. They are keeping opponents to an average of 100 points per 100 possessions according to Ken Pomeroy's ratings, compared to 106 points per 100 by the Owls. Offensively, Temple only has the narrow edge. Also, Delaware State was able to shoot 43.9% from beyond the arc against the  Owls, which is not a promising sign. Boston College has attempted an average of 30 threes per game.

Over/Under Pick for BC vs. Temple

  • Under 146.5 (5 units)

I expect this one to go under. Boston College leans more on its defense to win games. Opponents are only shooting 37.8% against them after three games. Offensively, Boston College is shaky. They are shooting a weak 39.3% on the season.

In addition, the Owls’ defense has been a strength so far. They held Delaware State to 65 points and La Salle to just 63 points. Also, when it comes to pace, these squads keep it slower. Boston College is pegged 290th in adjusted tempo, while Temple is 215th.
