Cal State Fullerton Wins Four of Five

The Cal State Fullerton Titans are trying to make a run in the Big West standings, as they have won four of their last five conference games coming into this matchup. There is still work to do, as they are 6th in the conference standings, but are only 2.5 games behind first place which is held by Hawaii. The conference is still up for grabs, and the Titans are coming off a win over Bakersfield where they were led by Landon Seaman with 18 points off the bench.

Seaman has been coming off the bench, but is one of their top performers as a 6'8 senior forward who is third on the team in scoring with 12.3 PPG. Seaman is playing his first season of Division I ball, after playing in the lower divisions over the past three seasons. Their top scorer this year has been Joshua Ward, a 6'1 senior guard getting 14.4 PPG and 4.8 RPG. Ward is also playing his first season of D-1 ball this year. Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro transferred over from Valparaiso, he is adding 13.0 PPG as a 6'3 senior guard.

Cal State Fullerton is currently ranked 175th overall out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 206th in offensive efficiency and 151st in defensive efficiency. The Titans are one of the fastest teams in the nation, ranking 5th overall in pace of play.

The Beach Goes Cold

The Long Beach State Beach have cooled off recently, as they have lost each of their last five games in league play, and are tumbling in the standings as they prepare to host Fullerton here. Long Beach is currently 9th in the 11-team league, meaning they would need to run the table in the conference tournament to be considered for an NCAA Tournament berth. In their last game, Long Beach was led by Shaquil Bender with 22 points in the loss to UCSD.

Bender is a 6'2 senior guard who made his way all the way from being born in Philadelphia out to playing hoops at Long Beach State. Bender started his career at Manhattan, but is closing it out here with his 10.0 PPG. Their top scorer and outside shooter is Gavin Sykes, he is a freshman scoring guard who leads the team with 18.2 PPG and has 46 made threes which is also the highest total on the team. Sykes had a 34-point game against Cal State Northridge just a week ago. Petar Majstorovic is a 6'8 sophomore out of Serbia who is getting 15.4 PPG and 6.4 RPG.

Long Beach State is currently ranked 231st overall according to KenPom. They are 218th in offensive efficiency and 249th in defensive efficiency. They play much slower than Fullerton, ranking 161st in the nation in pace of play.

Cal State Fullerton vs. Long Beach State Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Cal State Fullerton vs. Long Beach State

  • Β Long Beach State to cover (5 units)

Fullerton is not a juggernaut in this conference, and they will be on the road here against a Long Beach team that is desperate for a win. Fullerton is led by two players playing their first season in Division I hoops, and have not proven that they can win big conference games on the road. Long Beach has a high scoring freshman in Sykes, who might prove to be too good for this conference in the long run, but will still be on the Beach's roster in this one. Majstrovic is a tough big, and the inside out combo will be too much as Long Beach gets the cover here.

Take Long Beach to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Cal State Fullerton vs. Long Beach State

  • Β Over (4 units)

Cal State Fullerton is not changing their strategy here, as they are one of the fastest teams in the league, and look to get up shots early in the possession. Fullerton is led by scoring guards, and are 5th in the nation out of 365 Division I teams in pace of play. The Titans play fast, and will look to play at the same pace here after using that strategy to beat Long Beach earlier in the season. Long Beach is at home and will be more comfortable on their home floor, and will look to match Fullerton's pace in a shootout. Expect a high scoring game here.

Take the over.
