Cal State Northridge eyes its seventh straight W
The Cal State Northridge Matadors (17-10; 13-12 ATS; 16-9 O/U) outlasted UC Santa Barbara 85-83 in overtime this past Thursday, extending their winning streak to six games. Now, the Matadors are 10-5 in conference play. They are tied with Hawaii for the second spot in the Big West.
The Matadors made just 38.7% of their field goals (3-for-17 from downtown) last Thursday. But they held UC Santa Barbara to 33.8% shooting from the field (13-for-40 from downtown) and committed 10 fewer turnovers than the Gauchos.
Senior guard Josiah Davis tortured the Gauchos for 31 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists. Davis averages 13.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds on the season, while fellow senior guard Larry Hughes scores 19.0 points per game.
Cal State Northridge is No. 174 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Matadors tally 109.8 points per 100 possessions (156th in the country) and surrender 107.9 points in return (148th). Despite the lack of height, the Matadors rank 23rd in the country in defensive rebound percentage (73.8%).
Long Beach State is slumping big-time
The Long Beach State Beach (8-19; 14-11 ATS; 17-8 O/U) are winless in eight straight games overall. They are coming off Thursday’s 69-58 home defeat against UC Irvine, in which the Beach failed to cover a 5.5-point spread. LBSU is now 4-11 in conference play, and the Beach will almost certainly miss the Big West championship tournament.
The Beach struggled against the Anteaters’ defense, making just 31.8% of their field goals (2-for-18 from deep). LBSU forced 22 turnovers, but the Beach’s offense was awful, finishing the game with a 7/16 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Freshman guard Gavin Sykes scored 16 points against UC Irvine, while sophomore forward Petar Majstorovic posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sykes tallies 17.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, and Majstorovic adds 15.3 points and 6.4 boards a night.
Long Beach State is No. 262 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Beach score 104.2 points per 100 possessions (260th in the country) and allow 110.9 points in return (216th). They are 88th in the country in defensive rebound percentage (71.3%) and 305th in offensive rebound percentage (26.8%).
Cal State Northridge vs. Long Beach State Pick
Spread Pick for Cal State Northridge vs. Long Beach State
- Cal State Northridge (4 units)
I can only look at the Matadors in this matchup. They’ve been on fire lately, scoring 81 or more points in six straight outings. Moreover, the Matadors must be highly motivated to beat the Beach and get revenge for that 7-point home loss in January.
The Beach have struggled a lot lately. They’ve gone 3-5 ATS during their losing streak. Their interior defense has been awful thus far, and the Matadors love to attack the paint. LBSU is 298th in opposing 2-point percentage (54.9%) and 320th in defensive free-throw rate (.420).
The Matadors have gone 5-1 ATS during their winning streak, and I expect them to stay on track.
Over/Under Pick for Cal State Northridge vs. Long Beach State
- Over (4 units)
The Matadors play at the third-fastest pace in the country, recording 73.7 possessions per 40 minutes. They will continue to push the ball in transition whenever they can and look to take full advantage of Long Beach State’s defensive shortcomings.
The Beach register 68.1 possessions per 40 minutes (147th in the country). The over is 14-6 in their last 20 games overall, and it is 10-2 in LBSU’s previous 12 outings at home. Also, the over has it in 13 of the Matadors’ last 18 games overall and nine of their past 11 road tilts.
