Campbell Covers in Loss to Wisconsin

The Campbell Fighting Camels continue a tough schedule to begin the season. Campbell was inconsistent last season and went 15-17, but managed a 10-8 mark in conference play. They only return one of their top five scorers. The Camels brought in a ton of transfers, hoping to compensate for the lost scoring. This is their first year with new coach John Andrzejek. Campbell was hit with a 96-64 road defeat by Wisconsin to begin the season. They were marked huge 21-point dogs.

Cam Gregory is the leading returning scorer. The senior guard registered 7.8 PPG on only 41.2% shooting. He averaged 2.6 RPG. DJ Smith is expected to take a step forward this season. The senior guard averaged 9.1 PPG with Robert Morris last season and was outstanding to begin the season, scoring 23 points on 53% shooting.

Doodads Butka was the biggest name the Camels attracted in the offseason. The sophomore forward spent last season with Pepperdine, where he enjoyed a strong year, recording an average of 9.6 PPG accompanied by 6.1 RPG. He scored 10 points to open the season. Jeremiah Johnson could be one of the biggest scorers on this squad. The sophomore guard had an outstanding season with Green Bay last year, reporting an average of 10.5 PPG and connecting on 55% of his field goals. Muneer Newton is a player who could break out. The senior forward averaged 9 PPG with Delaware State last season.

Campbell is ranked 212th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings.  They were voted to finish 7th in the CAA preseason poll voted by coaches. Last season, Campbell averaged 70.2 points on the season, ranking them 276th. The Camels' defense was a strength, keeping opponents to 67.8 points, placing them 55th.

West Virginia Begins Season with Win

The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the season with some question marks. This is a program that was decimated by transfers in the offseason. They have almost an entirely new roster compared to this season. Their top five scorers all departed in the offseason. West Virginia went 19-13 and 10-10 in conference play last season. West Virginia also has a new coach in Ross Hodge. The Mountaineers were sharp in the opener, posting a 70-54 win against Mount St. Mary’s in a clash that had the Mountaineers tabbed as huge 20-point favorites. The Mountainers' defense was key in the win, keeping them to 39.1% shooting.

Honor Huff is expected to be their biggest offensive threat. The senior guard is a proven scorer, but has done so with smaller conference teams. He spent last year with Chattanooga, averaging 15.2 PPG on 42.4% shooting. He is a threat from beyond the arc. Huff amassed 16 points to begin the season but shot a weak 25%. Harlan Obioha is expected to be a key defensive player. The senior center had an outstanding season with UNC Wilmington last year, netting 9.6 PPG accompanied by 6 RPG.

The new transfers continue with Jasper Floyd. The senior guard has experience and was a good player for North Texas last year. He delivered 9 PPG and is a strong playmaker. He averaged 3.9 APG last season. He dropped 25 points in his West Virginia debut. Another North Texas transfer is Brenen Lorient. The senior forward averaged 11.7 PPG last season and scored 11 points in the opener. Treysen Eaglestaff was dominant for North Dakota last season, sporting an average of 18.9 PPG.

The Mountaineers are rated 68th in the country to begin the season in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. They were chosen to finish 11th in the Big 12 preseason poll selected by the media. Last season, West Virginia posted an average of only 68.2 points, pegging them near the bottom at 315th. The Mountaineers' defense was among the best last season, keeping opponents to 64.9 points, marking them 20th in the country.

Campbell vs. West Virginia Pick

Spread Pick for Campbell vs. West Virginia

  • Campbell Fighting Camels +16 (5 units)

The Campbell Fighting Camels were a strong team in the CAA last year, posting a 10-8 record. They have quite a few new players, but they compensated by adding proven transfers. The West Virginia Mountaineers are an interesting team this year. They have a completely new roster. While the Mountaineers also brought in proven transfers, none of these transfers played in a power-conference team last season.

Furthermore, West Virginia has a new coach in Ross Hodge, and it could take some time for this entirely new roster to find a groove. In the season opener, they only shot 43.8% against Mount St. Mary's. To begin the season, Ken Pomeroy’s ratings have Campbell averaging 102.9 points per 100 possessions compared to 110.8 points per 100 by the Mountaineers, which is not a huge difference. West Virginia will be in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings, and this spread is too big considering the above.

Over/Under Pick for Campbell vs. West Virginia

  • Over 140.5 (5 units)

I expect a shootout. These squads attempted a ton of threes last year. Campbell was above with an average of 23 threes per game, while WVU tossed an average of 26.5 threes per game. Defensively, the Fighting Camels are shaky. They squandered 96 points against Wisconsin in the opener.

In addition, while only projections this early in the season, as mentioned, Ken Pomperoy has West Virginia averaging 110.8 points per 100 possessions, which ranks them in the top third at 78th in the country. The offense is improved compared to last season. The Mountaineers were out-rebounded by Mt. St. Mary's in the opener, while the Camels held Wisconsin to 29 boards. I expect Campbell's rebounding to lead to offensive boards, creating more scoring chances.
