The Marquette Golden Eagles are hosting the Central Michigan Chippewas in an early Saturday game at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on truTV. Marquette hasn’t gotten off to the greatest start, but they come into this matchup as a big 20.5-point favorite with the total set at 151.5 according to ESPN BET. These teams played last season, and Marquette only won 70-62 as a 26.5-point favorite.

Central Michigan is a large underdog

In the Sports Illustrated preseason rankings, the Central Michigan Chippewas came in at 286th in the country and 11th in the MAC, and their results to start have been all over the place. They beat Appalachian State 82-66 in the MAC–Sun Belt Challenge as a 1-point favorite, but they were also beaten badly by Bradley and South Alabama. They handled Coppin State 82-59 as a 10-point favorite, then got smashed by Northern Kentucky 90-66 as a four-point favorite in their last game.

According to KenPom, Central Michigan is 307th in the country after its first five games. They’re 273rd offensively, but the defense has been one of the country's worst, ranking 318th. Nathan Claerbaut, a 7-foot senior, leads the team with 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Four other Chippewas average at least 8 ppg, but no one else averages double figures.

Marquette is coming off back-to-back losses

Marquette expects to be an NCAA Tournament team this season. They ranked 36th in the Sports Illustrated preseason poll and fourth in the Big East. The Golden Eagles have played a tough schedule, and it shows in their .500 record. They’ve picked up blowout wins over Albany, Southern University, and Arkansas–Little Rock, but they were blown out as a three-point dog to Indiana on November 9th. They now come into this game on a two-game skid after losing to Maryland 89-82 and Dayton 77-71 on Wednesday.

Marquette is 69th overall in the KenPom rankings. They’re at their best defensively, where they rank 53rd, and they sit 89th on the offensive end. The Golden Eagles have experienced players leading the way. Chase Ross, a 6’8 senior, has been a star, averaging 19.8 points per game. Ben Gold is fourth on the team at 10 points per game and leads the team with 8.3 rebounds. Both Ross and Gold are in their fourth season with Marquette.

Key Injury Report for Marquette:

  • G Sean Jones (shoulder) is out. Averages 6ppg and 4apg.

Central Michigan Chippewas at Marquette Golden Eagles

Central Michigan vs Marquette ATS Pick: `

  • Marquette -20.5 (4 units)

Coming off two straight losses to quality opponents, this is a spot for Marquette to get right. It’s an early tip, and I expect the Golden Eagles to show up sharp and handle their business. Central Michigan doesn’t have reliable perimeter scoring, and Marquette should be able to take control early. I’m comfortable laying the points and backing Marquette to cover.

Central Michigan vs Marquette Total Pick:

  • Under 152.5 (4 units)

Even though Marquette likes to play with pace and Central Michigan is bad defensively, I don’t see scoring being a two-way street. After dropping two in a row, Marquette should be locked in on the defensive end. The Golden Eagles have the personnel to slow down CMU's big man, Nathan Claerbaut, and I don’t trust the Chippewas’ supporting cast to do much to help him. I like the under.
