Charlotte has struggled offensively

Charlotte (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS, and 1-2 O/U) beat Indiana State (92-76) and Tennessee Tech (70-65) in its first two games, but was upset 62-55 by Davidson earlier this week. The Niners struggled offensively, scoring just 19 first-half points. They shot 35 percent overall, including 6-for-21 (29%) from deep, and missed 9 of their 20 free throws. The visiting Wildcats led by as many as 18 points and never trailed by more than one. Charlotte scores 72.3 points per game (312th) with a 44.0 percent field goal percentage (243rd), while its opponents average 68.0 points (97th) on 48.3 percent shooting (319th).

The 49ers went 11-22 last season, finishing last in the American Athletic Conference with a 3-15 record. It was a disappointing result for a Charlotte squad that was 19-12 overall and third in the AAC in 2023-24. The 2025-26 Niners team is coached by Aaron Fearne (30-34 record) and was picked to finish last in the AAC's preseason poll.

This season's roster looks much different from a year ago, as Charlotte lost six players to graduation and five more to the transfer portal. Fearne brought in 12 newcomers, including eight transfers and four freshmen. Senior forward Ethan Butler (Oregon) and sophomore forward Arden Conyers (South Carolina) bring Power-Four experience, but neither has made an impact through three games. The 49ers' leading scorer is sophomore guard Ben Bradford, who is averaging 17.0 points this season. A few other Niners players to watch against the Hokies are Siena transfer guard Major Freeman (13.3 PPG), Marshall transfer guard Dezayne Mingo (12.3 PPG and 4.0 APG), and 7-foot-2 Providence transfer center Anton Bonke (11.0 PPG and 10.7 RPG).

Charlotte 49ers Basketball Injury Report: No injuries to report for Sunday's game against Virginia Tech.

Is Virginia Tech a sleeper in the ACC?

Virginia Tech (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS, and 2-1 O/U) has defeated Charleston Southern (98-67), Providence (107-101 in overtime), and St. Joseph's (94-59). The Hokies shot 52 percent in their win over the Hawks, hitting 11 threes and scoring 50 points in the paint. They led by as many as 40, forcing 19 turnovers. VT scores 100.0 points per game (104th) on 49.6 percent shooting (83rd), and its opponents average 76.0 points (172nd) with a 38.3 percent field goal percentage (88th).

The Hokies compiled a 13-19 record in 2024-25, winning 8 of their 20 Atlantic Coast Conference games. They were 19-15 the previous season and received an at-large bid to the NIT. Virginia Tech is in its seventh season under head coach Mike Young, who has led the program to a 106-85 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2025-26 team features four returning players, three transfers, and six freshmen. VT was selected to finish 12th in the ACC Preseason Poll.

Senior forward Tobi Lawal is the headliner of the returnees, after averaging 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds last season. Junior guard Jaden Schutt, who started his career at Duke, is a three-point threat, and Tyler Johnson (6.7 PPG with 28 starts) and Ben Hammond (5.6 PPG with 17 starts) played significant minutes last season as freshmen. Three newcomers to watch are junior forward Amani Hansberry (9.8 PPG and 6.5 RPG at West Virginia), senior guard Jailen Bedford (10.2 PPG and 4.3 RPG at UNLV), and freshman guard Neoklis Avdalas (five-star recruit from Greece).

Spread Pick for Charlotte vs. Virginia Tech

  • Hokies -17.5  (5 Units)

Virginia Tech has too much offensive firepower for Charlotte. The 49ers will struggle to keep the game competitive on the road against a deep Hokies team featuring seven players scoring between 9 and 18 points per game. Hansberry and Lawal will also dominate on the boards, creating second-chance scoring opportunities. On top of that, VT has taken great care of the basketball (8.3 turnovers per game), ranking 13th nationally in turnovers per offensive play. On the other end of the court, the Hokies will neutralize the 49ers' three-point threats, making the visitors too one-dimensional. Without the three-ball, the visitors will struggle, as they shoot just 45.6% inside the arc (279th).

Over/Under Pick for Charlotte vs. Virginia Tech

  • Under 148 (4 Units)

Charlotte will struggle if it can't knock down enough threes on Sunday. The 49ers were held to 55 points at home in their last game and aren't deep enough to go score for score with Virginia Tech. They feature four double-digit scorers, but their next three contributors average only five points per game. The visitors know their best game plan for keeping the game competitive will be to slow down the pace, as they have all season (343rd nationally in possessions per game). The Hokies are much higher-tempo, but with the Niners slowing them down, bettors should anticipate an average-paced contest. Plus, with the game in control in the second half, VT will be content coasting and taking its foot off the pedal.
