Creighton went 25-11 last season, finishing second in the Big East with a 15-5 record in the regular season. They were a 9-seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Auburn in the second round. The Bluejays are led by head coach Greg McDermott, who has compiled a 351-171 record with ten NCAA tourney appearances (five straight years) in 16 seasons in Omaha. They have finished in the top four of the Big East standings nine seasons in a row, and were picked to finish third in the conference's preseason poll. The Bluejays lost several key players from last season's squad, most notably senior center Ryan Kalkbrenner, who averaged 19.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. Steven Ashworth, Pop Isaacs, and Jamiya Neal must also be replaced.
Creighton's starting five features three transfers and two returnees. Junior forward Jasen Green (4.9 PPG and 3.2 RPG), who missed the opener but returned to practice last week, is the longest tenured player on the roster. He has shot nearly 75 percent inside the arc in limited action and is expected to become more of an asset this season. Sophomore forward Jackson McAndrew (Big East All-Freshman) and junior forward Isaac Traudt (10 points and 7 rebounds vs. South Dakota) will also be key contributors. McDermott did an excellent job filling needs in the portal, adding junior forward Owen Freeman (16.7 PPG and 6.7 RPG at Iowa), senior guard Josh Dix (14.4 PPG and 42.2% 3PT% at Iowa), senior guard Nik Graves (17.5 PPG and 4.3 RPG at Charlotte), and sophomore guard Blake Harper (19.5 PPG and 6.2 RPG at Howard).

Gonzaga is back for another shot at a deep tourney run
Gonzaga (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 0-2 O/U) picked up a pair of dominant wins over Texas Southern (98-43) and Oklahoma (83-68) in its first two games. The Zags dominated defensively in their season opener, holding the Tigers to 16 second-half points and 25 percent shooting in the game. They jumped out to a big lead in the first half against the Sooners, too. Gonzaga dominated inside, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds with 58 points in the paint.
The Bulldogs were 26-9 last season, finishing second in the West Coast Conference with a 14-4 regular season record. They won the WCC Tournament, but couldn't sustain their momentum, losing in the second round of the NCAA tourney. Gonzaga is led by long-time head coach Mark Few, who has a 744-152 record in Spokane. The Zags were picked to win the WCC in the conference's preseason poll.
Gonzaga lost several key contributors from last season's squad, including veteran guards Ryan Nembhard (10.5 PPG and 9.8 APG) and Khalif Battle (13.6 PPG and 3.7 RPG). The Bulldogs aren't short on returning talent, though. Senior forward Graham Ike is back (17.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG) to lead one of the country's most experienced college hoops squads (average age of 21.2 years old). Braden Huff, a 6-10 redshirt junior, was a force in the postseason, giving the Zags an intimidating frontcourt combo. Gonzaga has versatile, lengthy wings and plenty of depth after Few made several significant offseason additions through the portal. A few of the impactful newcomers are senior wing Tyon Grant-Foster (14.8 PPG and 5.9 RPG at Grand Canyon), senior guard Adam Miller (9.8 PPG at Arizona State), and senior wing Jalen Warley (7.5 PPG at Florida State).

Creighton vs. Gonzaga Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Creighton vs. Gonzaga
- Bulldogs -10.5 (5 Units)
This is a scary matchup for the Bluejays. Freeman is battling a knee injury that won't sideline him, but will hold him back for a few weeks. He's tasked with defending one of the nation's best frontcourts, as Ike and Huff are one of the best one-two punches, along with veteran wings Grant-Foster and Warley. Ike and Huff are excellent passing big men, Warley can be a lockdown defender, and Grant-Foster is the hoops version of a Swiss Army Knife. The Bulldogs dominated Oklahoma in the paint in their previous game, outscoring them 38-4 in the first half alone. Their offensive rebounding prowess will be challenging for Creighton to match.
In a hostile road environment, I doubt the Bluejays will shoot the basketball efficiently enough to cover the spread. They shot just 30 percent from three-point range in their season opener, as McAndrew struggled (4-for-12 shooting, including 2-for-7 from long range). The visitors need their guards to step up in a big-time way, and I'm not confident they will provide enough shooting touch. At the end of the night, the Zags' depth, versatility, and home-court advantage will be too much for Creighton to overcome.
Over/Under Pick for Creighton vs. Gonzaga
- Under 166.5 (4 Units)
This total is too high. The visitors won't put enough points on the scoreboard to keep the game competitive, leading to a slower-paced, lower-scoring second half. Ike put pressure on OU's big men in their last game, attacking them to get both starters into foul trouble. That would be a disaster for Creighton, which already lacks the frontcourt depth and talent to compete with the Zags. That said, Ike also fouled out against the Sooners, which was an issue for the big man last season. The Gonzaga offense stalled without their star, managing only 34 second-half points, as they settled for too many poor looks from three (3-for-13 after halftime).
It wouldn't surprise me if Gonzaga scores 75-plus points, but the Bluejays won't keep pace on the other end of the court. The Bulldogs' length will clog the lane and passing lanes, leading to costly turnovers. The under is a combined 3-0 in these teams' games this season. Bet on that trend to continue on Tuesday!
