Last Friday, Dayton trounced Loyola Chicago as a 16.5-point home fave. The Flyers outscored the Ramblers 47-21 in the second half. Dayton went 10-for-23 from downtown, and junior guard De’Shayne Montgomery led the way with 21 points.
Montgomery averages 15.1 points and 3.9 rebounds, while senior guard Javon Bennett tallies 16.8 points and 2.9 assists per game. Bennett had 19 points and four assists last Friday. The 7-foot-1 sophomore Frenchman Amael L’Etang (11.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG) is another Flyer with points per game in double figures.
The Flyers lean on their defense. They allow just 99.4 points per 100 possessions (28th in the country) while scoring 110.9 points in return (156th). The Flyers are third in the nation in defensive turnover percentage and 56th in opposing 2-point percentage (48.0%).
La Salle hopes for another upset
The La Salle Explorers (6-13; 9-9 ATS; 9-9 O/U) snapped their two-game skid last Saturday. After consecutive defeats to Saint Louis 84-72 at home and Richmond 74-53 on the road, the Explorers outlasted St. Bonaventure 78-74 as 4.5-point home underdogs to improve to 2-4 in conference play.
La Salle was on fire last Saturday, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc and 20-for-20 from the foul line. The Explorers allowed 40 points in the paint and committed 17 turnovers, but they found a way to come out on top. Junior forward Jerome Brewer led the charge with 27 points and six rebounds.
Brewer tallies 11.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while senior guard Jaeden Marshall posts 13.0 points and 2.2 boards a night. Marshall tortured St. Bonaventure for 23 points off the bench, going 5-for-10 from downtown.
La Salle is No. 236 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Explorers score 106.4 points per 100 possessions (239th in the country) and allow 110.9 points in return (192nd). La Salle makes just 46.5% of its shots from inside the arc (322nd) and turns the ball over on 19.3% of its possessions (308th).
Dayton vs. La Salle Pick
Spread Pick for Dayton vs. La Salle
- Dayton -10.5 (5 units)
I’m backing the Flyers because of their sturdy defense. The Explorers are turnover-prone, and the Flyers love to put heavy pressure on the ball. Moreover, the Explorers’ shooting has been awful this season. I noted their terrible 2-point percentage, and the Explorers make just 31.3% of their shots from downtown (290th in the country). They are 348th in the country in 3-point rate (.299).
The Flyers are not a great offensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but they have enough weapons to score against La Salle and beat the number. Dayton makes 53.9% of its 2-pointers (104th) and ranks fourth in the country in free-throw rate (.483).
Over/Under Pick for Dayton vs. La Salle
- Under 137.5 (5 units)
As I noted, the Explorers’ offense has been pretty bad so far this season. Their shooting has been awful, and the Explorers have been turning the ball over a lot while playing at a slow pace. La Salle registers just 64.7 possessions per 40 minutes (321st in the nation).
The Flyers record 67.8 possessions per 40 minutes (175th). They won’t hesitate to push the ball in transition whenever possible, and they’ll probably take a lot of free throws, but I still have to go with the under. Each of Dayton’s last six games has gone under the total. Also, the under is 12-3 in the previous 15 encounters between Dayton and La Salle.
