Duke vs. Pitt prediction, picks and line moves

Is it good or bad to catch Duke off a loss? The Panthers will find that out in this Duke vs. Pittsburgh prediction on Tuesday night at 9 PM ET from the Petersen Events Center. No. 4 Duke (21-2, 10-1 ACC) returns from a last-second loss to rival North Carolina on Saturday night. They'll face a struggling Pitt squad (9-15, 2-9 ACC) that has lost three straight games. Last season, the Panthers were crushed at Durham 76-47 as a 14-point dog. Check out this pick below and more free College Basketball Predictions at Winners and Whiners.

Duke loses at the buzzer

There's nothing more painful than losing to your rivals on the road. It's worse to lose on a three-pointer at the buzzer (ok 0.4 seconds left) when the opposing crowd spills on the floor. That's what happened on Saturday night in Chapel Hill when Seth Trimble hit a corner three to lead North Carolina to a 71-68 win over the Blue Devils. It becomes more painful for Duke followers to lose when they led the entire way, including by 13 in the second half.

Cam Boozer had a great game with 24 points and 11 rebounds, but also had four turnovers and had several opportunities to score near the basket late in the game. Boozer also didn't get much help on offense as 6-6 guard Isaiah Evans was held to 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting. It's not like Duke is going through hard times. They had won 10 straight games before the loss at UNC.

Boozer leads the Blue Devils with 23.3 points per game, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists. Evans adds 14 points per game and shoots 40.7% from the field (33.3% 3pt). Duke ranks 7th in the nation in rebound rate and on KenPom, third overall, eighth in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and third in Adjusted Defense.

Tough Challenge for Panthers

Pitt has lost three straight, six of seven and nine of 11 heading into this game. For Jeff Capel, this is a huge challenge against his former team that he played with in the nineties. He was also on the same Duke staff as head coach Jon Scheyer for four seasons. In the Panthers' last game, they fell at home to SMU 86-67 on Saturday, led by Cameron Corhen's 15 points. But Pitt shot just 36% from the field and 24% (8-of-33) from three-point range.

To make matters worse, the Panthers have been playing without leading scorer Brandin Cummings (12.5ppg), who has been dealing with an ankle injury. He's listed as questionable for this contest. Corhen adds 12.3 points and leads the Panthers with 7.4 rebounds.

Pitt is not going to outscore many teams, as they rank 302nd in points per game with 70.8. They rank 108th overall on KenPom, 111th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 124th in Adjusted Offense. They also rank 80th in total rebound rate.

Duke vs. Pittsburgh Prediction, Picks and Odds

  • Duke -15.5 (5 units)

You have to feel for Jeff Capel. His leading scorer might not play in this game and it wouldn't matter. Duke has covered five of seven overall, four of the last five on the road, and they are 4-1 ATS in their last five as a double-digit favorite. Pitt's defense has been worse at home as they are allowing teams to shoot 46.4% from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. Duke is shooting 49.7% from the field to rank 22nd overall, but it's their defense that will be the difference. They are holding teams to just 39.3% from the field overall and 31.2% from three-point range.

Over/Under Pick for Duke vs. Pitt

  • Under 137.5 (4 units)

Pitt has a horrific offense. In their last three losses, they averaged 55.3 points per game. They face a Duke team that holds squads to just 63.9 points per game to rank sixth in the nation. They are more than just Boozer and a bunch of All-Americans. The Panthers are 337th in pace of play so their best chance of winning or competing is slowing the game down to a halt.
