Huskies looking to get back in the win column
Northeastern came into the season ranked 274th in Sports Illustrated’s preseason rankings, and its start has matched those expectations. They opened with a one-point overtime loss to Boston University, grabbed wins over Colgate and Harvard, and now come in on a two-game losing streak after falling to Vermont 85-74 and Princeton 70-57. The Huskies are sitting 213th in KenPom and have struggled defensively, giving up 71.2 points per game while allowing opponents to shoot efficiently.
Offensively, Northeastern averages 70.2 points per game and shoots 42 percent from the field. LA Pratt leads the team with 17 points per game, and Youri Fritz has been a strong second option at 16.2 points and 7.4 rebounds. Xander Alarie is the top rebounder with 8.8 boards per game and adds 11.2 points.
Dru Joyce III leads Duquesne
Duquesne is moving in the opposite direction. In his second season, Dru Joyce III has the Dukes off to a strong start with wins over Niagara, Sacred Heart, Queens, and Loyola MD. Their only loss came in a competitive 87-77 game against Villanova. Sports Illustrated had Duquesne at 132nd in the preseason, and they’ve backed it up by sitting 113th in KenPom.
The Dukes are scoring 86.2 points per game while shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field. They also move the ball well with 17.4 assists per game and bring a solid defensive presence, allowing 77.8 points on average. The offense is led by Tarence Guinyard, who is averaging 20.6 points and knocking down 46.4 percent of his threes. Senior big man John Hugley IV adds 17.4 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds after previous stops at Pitt, Oklahoma, and Xavier.
G Jake DiMichele (foot) is questionable.
Duquesne Dukes at Northeastern Huskies
Duquesne vs Northeastern ATS Prediction:
-
Duquesne -8.5 (5 units)
The preseason ratings had Duquesne pegged as the much better team here, and now that the games have started, they also look like the much more complete team. The Dukes are faster, score more efficiently, and have multiple guys who can create offense.
Northeastern has struggled to get stops all season, and their pace tends to pick up when they fall behind, which usually leads to more opponent runs. With Duquesne ranking 86th in adjusted tempo, they should dictate the pace and pull away as the game goes on. I’m laying the points.
Duquesne vs Northeastern Total Prediction:
-
Over 150.5 (4 units)
This total is high, but Duquesne’s style makes the over the better play. They’re scoring over 86 points per game and shooting 50% overall. Northeastern’s defense has given up 85 and 70 in its last two games, and it rarely force opponents out of rhythm. As long as the Huskies can get into the low 70s, Duquesne should handle the rest. This matchup sets up well for points on both sides, especially with the Dukes’ tempo.
