Duquesne Looks for Revenge

The Duquesne Dukes have been heating up as of late, and have won four of their last five games coming into this matchup. A notable fact about their recent streak is that their lone loss in the stretch came against this St. Bonaventure squad. The Dukes currently sit in 7th in the Atlantic 10, which is now a 14-team league. In their last game, Duquesne was led by Tarence Guinyard with 27 points and five rebounds in their close win over George Washington.

Guinyard is their top scorer as outside shooter as a 6'2 senior guard, he is averaging 16.6 PPG, and has knocked in 52 three pointers on 39.4% outside shooting. This is his second yard of Division I basketball, as he jumped up from the lower divisions as a junior to play at UT-Martin before coming to close his career with Duquesne. Jimmie Williams is a 6'5 junior who can also shoot from deep, he has 50 made threes on the season while adding 16.1 PPG and 4.8 RPG. Their best interior player is John Hughley IV, the 6'11 270-pound senior adds another 10.7 PPG and 4.6 RPG.

Duquesne is currently ranked 113th overall out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 116th in offensive efficiency and 130th in defensive efficiency. They play at a fast pace, ranking 54th in the nation in tempo.

Bonnies Need More Wins

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies were able to defeat Duquesne in their last meeting, and are coming off a win over Fordham, but that does not mean they are having a winning season. The Bonnies are only 3-8 in league play, ahead of only La Salle and Loyola Chicago in the 14 team league. Neither of these two teams are likely to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, so they would need to get hot and win the conference tournament to advance. In their last game, St. Bonaventure was led by Daryl Simmons II with 23 points and five rebounds in their win over Fordham.

Simmons is also their top scorer and outside shooter, as this game appears to be a battle of high level outside scorers. Simmons is a 5'11 junior guard scoring 16.3 PPG, and has converted 64 three pointers on 42.1% shooting from the outside. He played his first two seasons with Gardner-Webb, and averaged 17.4 last season as a sophomore. Frank Mitchell is a strong power forward, he is 6'8 and 270 pounds while getting 16.0 PPG and 9.7 RPG. Mitchell played in the Big Ten last season with Minnesota, but transferred out to get a bigger role with the team. Cayden Charles is another scorer on the perimeter, he is getting 12.9 PPG and 6.5 RPG as a 6'3 senior guard.

St. Bonaventure is ranked 142nd overall according to KenPom. They are 95th in offensive efficiency, but only 234th in defensive efficiency. They play much slower than Duquesne, ranking 222nd in pace of play.

Duquesne vs. St. Bonaventure Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Duquesne vs. St. Bonaventure

  • Β Duquesne to cover (5 units)

It is tough to beat a conference opponent twice in one year, and it gets even more difficult when the team that lost the first game is the better overall squad. Duquesne has won four of their last five, and has revenge on their mind after their loss to the Bonnies last time out. Duquesne is a relatively balanced team offensively and defensively, but the St. Bonaventure defense is going to be the reason why the Bonnies go down here. Their defense is the worst unit in this game by a wide margin, ranking only 222nd in the nation in efficiency. Duquesne has two shooters on the perimeter, and Hughley is a 6'11, 270 pound force who will battle Mitchell on the inside. Duquesne gets back on top here.

Take Duquesne to cover

Over/Under Pick for Duquesne vs. St. Bonaventure

  • OverΒ  (4 units)

St. Bonaventure is strong on offense, and weak on defense. On top of that, Duquesne likes to play fast, all of this adds up to an over. Duquesne will look to push the tempo here, they are 54th in the nation in pace of play and Guinyard and Williams will be looking to get out in transition and put up a big number against this weak defense. St. Bonaventure has to rely on their scoring, they are top 100 in offensive efficiency, but their defense is giving up far too many easy buckets. The Bonnies have gone over in five of their last seven because of their weak defense, and will do so again here.

Take the over.
