It’s a continuation of the opening week of the 2025-26 college basketball season and it brings a non-conference tilt between foes from the AAC and the Atlantic 10 on the hardwood as the East Carolina Pirates take on the Richmond Spiders Saturday evening in the Old Dominion and we have you covered with our East Carolina vs. Richmond prediction. ECU Looking to Build Positive Momentum

East Carolina had their hands full in a high-scoring affair as they took down Georgia Southern at home in their season opener. The Pirates now look to go on the road and earn a second straight win to build some early-season momentum. Against Georgia Southern, East Carolina led by as many as five in the first half and trailed by as many as three before settling for a 44-42 edge at intermission. The Pirates led by as many as 10 in the second half and trailed by as many as four. They trailed 82-81 with 2:47 remaining before scoring the next seven points to lead 88-82 with 31 seconds remaining and hung on after the Eagles made it a one-point game with seven seconds left to earn the victory.

In the contest, the Pirates shot 47% from the floor, including four of 20 from three-point range, and owned a 44-37 edge on the glass. Both teams struggled at the charity stripe as East Carolina was 26 of 41 while Georgia Southern was 18 of 30. Jordan Riley led the way for the Pirates with 22 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Giovanni Emejuru contributed 17 points and nine rebounds while Reid Cason chipped in 14 points off the bench. Nine players took the floor for East Carolina in the win with each of them scoring at least four points in the victory. There are things to clean up but a win is a win.

Spiders Seek to Tie Up Pirates, Earn 2-0 Start

Richmond had little trouble dispatching an overmatched Southern Virginia squad in their season opener on Wednesday. The Spiders now look to turn in another solid performance as they take the floor against another step up in competition in search of a 2-0 start. Against Southern Virginia, Richmond gave up the opening bucket of the game but reeled off the next 10 points to take control of the game. The Spiders never saw the lead drop below six over the final 34-plus minutes of the contest. Richmond led by 17 at the half and led by as many as 33 points in the second half as they cruised to the victory.

East Carolina vs. Richmond Pick

ECU vs. Richmond Spread Pick

  • Richmond -6 (4 units)

East Carolina has to consider themselves fortunate to earn the win in their season opener. Clanking 80% of your three-point attempts and 15 free throws aren’t precursors to success most nights, but they caught a break as Georgia Southern struggled to shoot straight as well. East Carolina went 4-6 as the visiting team last season and three of those came against teams ranked 191st or lower in the KenPom rankings. Richmond is going to take some time trying to get their rotation up to speed with 11 new faces and after losing their top two scorers from a season ago. Still, the Spiders should be better offensively than they were a year ago and after seeing the Pirates’ issues defensively in the opener, give the edge to the hosts here.

ECU vs. Richmond Over/Under Pick

  • Under 144.5 (4 units)

The Pirates were 240th in field goal percentage (43.6%), 248th in two-point shooting (50.1%), 289th in threes per game (6.7) and 309th in three-point shooting (31.6%) in 2024-25. East Carolina was below average in tempo, ranking 216th with an average of 66.8 possessions per contest. Richmond finished 241st in offensive efficiency, 292nd in effective field goal percentage (48.4%), 360th in offensive rebounding percentage (19.3%), 329th in field goal percentage (41.8%) and 315th in three-point shooting. The Spiders stood just 345th in tempo with 63.9 possessions a night last season. Look for the Spiders to grind this one down and keep this game under the number.
