Gators have a new-look backcourt
Florida is fresh off the program's third national title. UF is the first school to win at least three national championships in both men's basketball and football. The Gators are in their fourth season under coach Todd Golden, who made a big leap in year three, as the team reached the NIT and the NCAA tournament's Round of 64 in his first two years at the helm. Golden will have another challenge in front of him in 2025-26, as Florida lost four of its top eight players from last season's rotation.

The Gators will miss star guard Walter Clayton Jr., as well as the contributions made by Alijah Martin and Will Richard, but their frontcourt is stacked. First-team preseason All-American Alex Condon will lead the unit, with postseason star Thomas Haugh expected to play a more significant role after coming off the bench last season. With two-way talents Rueben Chinyelu and Micah Handlogten joining them, UF has arguably the best frontcourt in the country. Florida's backcourt will feature two new faces, but they aren't inexperienced newcomers. Golden dipped into the transfer portal for guards, bringing in Princeton's Xaivian Lee (16.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 5.5 APG) and Arkansas' Boogie Fland (13.5 PPG and 5.1 APG).
Fland will serve as the primary point guard, but Lee will also have on-ball opportunities. If the duo can replace last season's accurate three-point shooters β Fland shot 34.0% and Lee shot 36.6% in 2024-25 β the Gators will have another great team. Their frontcourt will score plenty of buckets inside the arc, and their offensive rebounding prowess will open up second-chance catch-and-shoot looks on the perimeter.

Arizona boasts a top-five freshman class
Arizona has reached the Sweet 16 in three of coach Tommy Lloyd's four seasons in Tucson, but the Wildcats are hoping for a deeper postseason run in 2025-26. U of A lost several key playmakers, including leading scorer Caleb Love and freshman guard Carter Bryant, who was drafted 14th overall by San Antonio. There is plenty of returning and incoming talent, however, for Lloyd to work with.
The Wildcats will be paced by senior guard Jaden Bradley, who scored 12.1 points with 3.7 assists per game last season. He is one of three returning starters, joined by forward Tobe Awaka (8.0 PPG and 7.8 RPG) and 7-foot-2 center Motiejus Krivas, who missed most of last season with a lower leg injury. Arizona also brought in one of the nation's top recruiting classes, with McDonald's All-Americans Koa Peat and Brayden Burris the crown jewels of the group. Both are projected starters, as Peat is a forward with a college-ready physique and athleticism, and Burries is a skilled offensive player.
Arizona's frontcourt is big and bulky. Awake is stout and physical, making up for his height (6-foot-8) with fierce determination around the basket. Krivas, meanwhile, has plenty of size, but he also has good hands for a 7-footer. With the dynamic playmaker Bradley leading the unit, the Wildcats will be tough competition for most teams this season.

Florida vs. Arizona Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Florida vs. Arizona
- Wildcats +3.5 (5 Units)
This is a fun game, as the Gators and Wildcats are prestigious programs that play entertaining basketball. They also match up well due to similar styles of play, which should result in a very competitive game. Both teams will look to score in transition and at the rim, relying on strong offensive rebounding to create second-chance opportunities. This will be a physical matchup in the paint, as the Wildcats have plenty of size to bang with the Gators' bigs.
With that said, I feel confident taking Arizona's side against the spread. The Wildcats did an excellent job defending the rim last season, and they also excelled against dribble handoffs, which is a key against UF's motion offense. Arizona's bigs are also solid finishers around the basket. The Gators' post-up defense will be put to the test by Awaka, Krivas, and Peat. I'm also hesitant to back Florida, as its new-look backcourt is flashy, but I question how well Fland and Lee will play together. It seems to me that Lee needs the basketball to maximize his impact. The lean senior (180 lbs) is a weak defender, doesn't excel in catch-and-shoot situations, and won't score much around the rim. He's a star with the ball, but Fland is expected to be the primary point guard. Arizona's guards are talented enough to outplay them, making the Wildcats my pick to cover the spread on Monday night.
Over/Under Pick for Florida vs. Arizona
- Over 163.5 (4 Units)
These teams will push the pace all night, scoring in transition and around the basket in a competitive, back-and-forth game. Both squads averaged 72 possessions per game last season, ranked 55th and 79th nationally. They're expected to be among the top offensive rebounding teams in the country, and both are also less dominant in the defensive rebounding department. With Fland and Bradley, the Gators and Wildcats boast transition-happy floor generals who will create a wealth of good looks for their teammates.
