Gators are building momentum after a challenging non-con slate

Florida (12-5 SU, 7-10 ATS, and 7-10 O/U) beat Oklahoma 96-79 in Norman earlier this week, improving to 3-1 in SEC play this season. The Gators jumped out to an early lead and never relented, taking a 46-24 lead into halftime and coasting in the second half. They shot 54 percent from the floor and dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Sooners 43-31 with 17 offensive rebounds. UF was unstoppable inside, outscoring OU 60-22 in the paint.

Florida is led in scoring by junior forward Thomas Haugh, who averages 17.4 points on 47.8 percent shooting. He also contributes 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. A few other Gators to watch on Saturday against Vanderbilt are junior forward Alex Condon (14.3 PPG and 8.3 RPG), sophomore guard Boogie Fland (11.8 PPG and 3.5 APG), and junior center Rueben Chinyelu (11.4 PPG and 10.7 RPG).

The UF defense surrenders 71.4 points per game (93rd) on 40.9 percent shooting (56th), including 33.4 percent from beyond the arc (194th). KenPom ranks Florida 10th nationally, including 19th in offensive efficiency rating and 9th in defensive efficiency rating.

Will the Commodores bounce back at home?

Vanderbilt (16-1 SU, 10-7 ATS, and 9-8 O/U) lost its first game of the season on Wednesday in Austin, falling 80-64 to Texas. The Commodores only trailed by five points at the half, but were dominated on the boards (-18 rebounding margin). The Longhorns also shot 53 percent from the field and knocked down 19 of their 22 free throws. Vandy never led by more than two points in the one-sided affair.

Vandy is led by senior guard Duke Miles, who averages 17.5 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting. He also contributes 4.4 assists and 2.9 steals per game. A few other Commodores to watch in Saturday's SEC clash against Florida are sophomore guard Tyler Tanner (17.2 PPG and 5.2 APG), senior forward Tyler Nickel (14.7 PPG and 3.5 RPG), and senior forward Devin McGlockton (10.4 PPG and 7.4 RPG).

The Commodores score 91.3 points per game (16th) on 49.6 percent shooting (27th), including 36.8 percent from beyond the arc (48th). The Vandy defense allows 72.6 points per game (113th) on 40.2 percent shooting (43rd), including 28.3 percent from long range (13th). KenPomΒ ranks Vanderbilt 11th nationally, including 10th in offensive efficiency rating and 13th in defensive efficiency rating.

Florida vs. Vanderbilt Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Florida vs. Vanderbilt

  • Commodores cover (4 Units)

Florida is an impressive, battle-tested team that has kept it close against some of the country's best teams, including Arizona, Duke, and UConn. The Gators didn't beat any of those squads, though, and have several red flags that are difficult to overlook. I'm concerned they will be too careless with the ball (14.0% turnover rate) on the road against a pesky Commodores defense that forces turnovers (ranked 7th nationally in steals per game) and will take advantage of them (2nd in potential quick points scored off breakaway steals vs. the average opponent). Florida is also among the least efficient three-point shooting teams in the country and hits just 70.9 percent of its foul shots. In short, I'm curious where the Gators' points will come from if they're challenged at the rim by the 'Dores (27th in opponent near-proximity shooting percentage).

Vanderbilt was humbled on the road by Texas earlier this week, but it should respond with a statement win against the defending champs on Saturday.

Over/Under Pick for Florida vs. Vanderbilt

  • Under (4 Units)

I expect the final score of Saturday's SEC clash to go under the high projected total. While both teams prefer to push the pace, this matchup projects to be competitive and defensive. Florida and Vandy rank 9th and 13th nationally in defensive efficiency, as they limit second-chance scoring opportunities and challenge shots at the rim. The Commodores' defense also ranks in the top 15 in both steals per game and opponent three-point percentage. It would surprise me if either team maintained a healthy lead in this game. With Florida and Vanderbilt tied for first in the conference standings, Saturday's game should be close and back-and-forth. I recommend a wager on the under.
