The Tigers lost a lot of talent
The Clemson Tigers had a very strong regular season last year. They finished 27-7, went 18-2 in the ACC, and advanced to the conference semifinals. With a balanced and veteran team, Clemson looked like a potential sleeper to make noise in the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the Tigers were on the wrong side of one of the tournament’s biggest opening-round stories, losing 69-67 to McNeese.
Coming into this season, the Tigers are not expected to be quite as strong. Sports Illustrated pegged them as the No. 52 team in the country in the preseason rankings and eighth in the ACC. Through three games, Clemson has not been tested. They beat New Hampshire 88-38 in the opener, knocked off Gardner-Webb 97-59 last Friday, and defeated Morehead State 83-56 on Tuesday.

Clemson has had a different leading scorer in every game so far, and no player has logged more than 24 minutes per game. Ace Buckner, a 6-3 freshman from Dallas, leads the team with 13.7 points per game. RJ Godfrey, who played two seasons at Clemson before transferring to Georgia last year, has returned and is averaging 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. Nevada transfer Nick Davidson, a 6-10 senior, has also contributed early with 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Hoyas looking to build off a winning season
The Georgetown Hoyas have been trying to return to their rich basketball history for years, and last season was a step in the right direction. The Hoyas went 18-16 and 8-10 in the Big East, posting a winning season that ended with an 81-69 loss to Nebraska in the second round of the NIT.
After being rated No. 59 by Sports Illustrated in the preseason, the Hoyas are unbeaten early. They opened with an 87-70 win over Coppin State, went on the road and beat Maryland 70-60, and on Wednesday got by Binghamton 83-70.
Six-foot-four guard KJ Lewis, the transfer from Arizona, leads the team with 16.7 points and eight rebounds per game. The Hoyas also welcome back Malik Mack, who started all 32 games for them last season and averaged 12.9 points. Mack is averaging 14.3 points through three contests. Georgetown added 7-foot-1 big man Vince Iwuchukwu, who played in 34 games for Rick Pitino at St. John’s last season (2.7 ppg, 1.7 rpg). He is averaging 11 points and 4.0 rebounds to start this season.
Clemson vs Georgetown Predictions
ATS Pick for Clemson vs. Georgetown
- Georgetown +2.5 (5 units)
If you look strictly at last season’s results, this line may suggest an easy play on Clemson. However, because of roster turnover, these teams are very different from a year ago. Georgetown did well in the portal and retained one of its top players in Mack. Clemson, on the other hand, suffered heavy roster losses and returns less than 10 percent of last season’s production.
With Georgetown hosting this game and already owning a solid win over Maryland under its belt, I think the Hoyas as a home underdog are the right play.
Total Pick for Clemson vs. Georgetown:
- Under 144.5 (4 units)
Clemson ranks 350th in adjusted tempo and will try to slow this game down and make it ugly. Georgetown has not been an efficient shooting team so far, and the Hoyas have already been involved in a grind-it-out style game when they beat Maryland 70-60. In that win, Georgetown shot just 40% from the field and 25% from three, but held the Terrapins to 25% shooting overall and 19% from deep.
Clemson will want to turn this into a rock fight, and Georgetown is built for one. With both teams trying to make a statement early, I like the under.
