Georgetown returns 10 players and a veteran coach

Georgetown (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) handled its business in its season opener. The Hoyas couldn't find the bottom of the net from long range (4-for-26 3PT shooting), but attacked the basket to get to the foul line (27-for-39). They also scored 38 points in the paint and 29 fast-break points. Georgetown led by as many as 29, forcing 16 Morgan State turnovers and holding the Bears to 39 percent shooting.

The Hoyas went 18-16 last season, including 8-12 in Big East competition. It was their first season with a winning record and their highest finish (seventh) in conference play since the 2018-19 season. Georgetown is led by third-year head coach Ed Cooley, who arrived in DC after spending 12 seasons coaching at Providence, where he compiled a 242-153 record. The Hoyas return ten players and were picked to finish sixth in the Big East's preseason poll.

Cooley led the Friars into March Madness in his third season at Providence, lending hope that Georgetown can make a similar leap after going from nine to 18 wins last season. While the Hoyas retained most of their roster, three double-digit scorers are gone, as Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy went pro, and Jayden Epps transferred to Mississippi State. Junior PG Malik Mack is back to lead the show after averaging 12.9 points and 4.3 assists, and Cooley added junior guard KJ Lewis from the transfer portal (10.8 PPG and 4.6 RPG at Arizona last season). A few other Hoyas to watch are 7-foot sophomore center Julius Halaifonua, sophomore guard Kayvaun Mulready, and sophomore forward Caleb Williams.

Georgetown Hoyas Basketball Injury Report:Β No injuries to report for Friday's game against Maryland.

Maryland has a brand-new roster this season

Maryland (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) coasted to a win in Baltimore on Monday night, scoring 47 first-half points and never looking back. The Terrapins led by as many as 30, shooting 23-for-25 at the charity stripe and scoring 30 points in the paint. UMD forced 20 Coppin State turnovers, leading to 30 points.

The Terps had a 27-9 record last season, including 14-6 in Big Ten play (tied for second place). As a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament, Maryland reached the Sweet 16, where it lost to eventual champion Florida, 87-71. After the postseason run, head coach Kevin Willard left to take the job at Villanova. UMD features a new-look roster this season, including ten transfers and five frosh. Head coach Buzz Williams, who was 120-73 in six seasons at Texas A&M, leads a Terrapins team ranked 13th in the Big Ten's preseason media poll.

Williams brought four Aggies with him to College Park: Andre Mills, Pharrel Payne, George Turkson Jr., and Solomon Washington. The senior forward Payne was the most impactful player, averaging 10.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in College Station. The other six transfer players are David Coit (Kansas), Collin Metcalf (Northeastern), Rakease Passmore (Kansas), Myles Rice (Indiana), Elijah Saunders (Virginia), and Isaiah Watts (Washington State). Coit will be a sparkplug guard off the bench, while Rice, Saunders, and Watts are expected to be starters. Passmore is out for the season (Achilles). True freshman guard Darius Adams, who scored 16 in the season opener, will also carve out a big role after decommitting from UConn late in the recruiting process.

Maryland Terrapins Basketball Injury Report:Β Rice (ankle) is questionable to play against Georgetown. He didn't suit up in Maryland's season opener.

Georgetown vs. Maryland Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Georgetown vs. Maryland

  • Hoyas +7.5 (4 Units)

The Hoyas won an exhibition game at Rupp Arena, beating Kentucky 84-70 by holding the Cats to 33 percent shooting, and played well defensively in their season opener. They are especially pesky on the perimeter, where they will challenge the Terps' ball-handlers and three-point shooters. While the Hoyas aren't expected to knock down many threes, they should fare well inside the arc. They have a few big bodies in Halaifonua, Seal Diouf, and St. John’s transfer Vince Iwochukwu, while Lewis will put pressure on the Terps with his score-first mentality and ability to draw fouls. Catch Maryland early because they have an entirely new roster and they won't be cohesive as they should be in conference play.

Maryland shot the lights out from three-point range in its opener, but if Georgetown can disrupt its rhythm from long range, this game should be competitive. Bet on the Hoyas to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Georgetown vs. Maryland

  • Under 148.5 (5 Units)

If the Terps can't get it going from beyond the arc, this game will certainly be low-scoring. The Hoyas' old-school Big East defense will cause problems for a new-look Maryland team that hasn't had time to gel. The true freshman Adams will definitely be challenged. Lewis is a two-way talent, having forced three steals in Georgetown's season opener and 38 and 49 steals in his first two seasons at Arizona. Even if the Terrapins manage to take good care of the ball and hit enough threes to beat the Hoyas by more than ten points, I don't see the over cashing. Georgetown shot 15 percent from long range against Morgan State and won't find as many easy looks in the paint with Payne defending the rim. It wouldn't surprise me if they barely score 60 points.

In this regional rivalry, I expect spirited competition from both squads. After all, five-star 2026 recruit Baba Oladotun has both teams in his list of final four schools. Bet on the Hoyas and Terps to bring the energy on defense, resulting in fewer than 149 points.
