Can Hoyas regain their early form on the road?

Georgetown (6-2 SU, 2-6 ATS, and 6-2 O/U) beat UMBC 90-81 in its previous game, bouncing back from consecutive losses to Dayton (84-79) and Miami FL (78-65). The Hoyas shot 56 percent in the home win, including 48 percent from three-point range. They dominated inside, scoring 48 points in the paint. Georgetown led by as many as 22 and never trailed.

The Hoyas went 18-16 last season, including 8-12 in Big East competition. It was their first season with a winning record and their highest finish (seventh) in conference play since the 2018-19 season. Georgetown is led by third-year head coach Ed Cooley, who arrived in DC after spending 12 seasons coaching at Providence, where he compiled a 242-153 record. The Hoyas return ten players and were picked to finish sixth in the Big East's preseason poll.

Cooley led the Friars into March Madness in his third season at Providence, lending hope that Georgetown can make a similar leap after going from nine to 18 wins last season. While the Hoyas retained most of their roster, three double-digit scorers are gone, as Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy went pro, and Jayden Epps transferred to Mississippi State. Junior PG Malik Mack is back to lead the show, averaging 16.5 points and 4.6 assists, and Cooley added junior guard KJ Lewis from the transfer portal (16.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 2.5 SPG this season). A few other Hoyas to watch are sophomore forward Caleb Williams (12.8 PPG and 5.9 RPG), 7-foot sophomore center Julius Halaifonua (8.4 PPG and 4.9 RPG), and sophomore forward Isaiah Abraham (6.1 PPG).

Georgetown Hoyas Injury Report:

  • C Vince Iwuchukwu (11.8 PPG in four games) is out.
  • G DeShawn Harris-Smith (5.2 PPG in six games) is questionable (illness).

UNC is a strong defensive squad

North Carolina (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS, and 2-6 O/U) defeated Kentucky 67-64 at Rupp Arena on Tuesday evening, bouncing back from its 16-point Thanksgiving Day loss to Michigan State. The Tar Heels easily outrebounded the Wildcats (+11 margin) and played sound perimeter defense, holding the home team to 1-for-13 from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Derek Dixon was the hero, scoring five of North Carolina’s last six points, including the tie-breaking layup with 16 seconds left.

UNC averages 81.3  points (185th) on 45.9 percent shooting (165th), including 31.7 percent from beyond the arc (254th). Defensively, the Heels allow 65.5 points per game (34th) on 37.3 percent shooting (15th), including 31.0 percent from three-point distance (121st). North Carolina ranks 23rd in NET rating, including 37th in offensive efficiency and 25th in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Freshman forward Caleb Wilson leads UNC in scoring, averaging 19.3 points on 52.5 percent shooting. He also contributes 10.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. A few other Tar Heels to watch against Georgetown are 7-foot junior center Henri Veesaar (16.0 PPG and 8.5 RPG), freshman guard Luka Bogavac (12.0 PPG and 3.3 APG), and junior forward Jarin Stevenson (7.4 PPG and 4.5 RPG).

North Carolina Tar Heels Injury Report:

  • G Seth Trimble (14.5 PPG in two games) is out (forearm).

Georgetown vs. North Carolina Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Georgetown vs. North Carolina

  • Tar Heels -11.5 (4 Units)

UNC will give Georgetown all it can handle in the paint. The Hoyas are playing without one of their key big men, Iwuchukwu, leaving them too thin in the frontcourt. The Tar Heels rank fifth nationally in near-proximity shot attempt rate, and they shoot 63 percent there. Wilson, Veesaar, and Stevenson will score early and often inside, forcing their way to the foul line (20th in FT attempt rate) and outrebounding Georgetown for second-chance scoring opportunities.

Over/Under Pick for Georgetown vs. UNC

  • Under 150 (4 Units)

Neither team will shoot a high percentage from three-point range in this game, as both shoot roughly 31 percent. The Hoyas aren't likely to generate many points in the paint, either, given their lack of frontcourt depth. This matchup projects to be average-paced (UNC ranks 153rd and Georgetown ranks 198th in pace, per KenPom), and Georgetown takes great care of the basketball (8.6 turnovers per game), which will keep the Tar Heels from generating fast-break points. These teams will battle for a half or longer before UNC pulls away, resulting in a competitive, lower-scoring game.

The under is 5-1 in North Carolina's last six games. The Tar Heels have also hit their team total under in 23 of their last 37 home games. Bet on that outcome in Sunday's college basketball battle in Chapel Hill!
