Georgetown Targets Second Big East Win

The Georgetown Hoyas are targeting their second Big East win of the year. Georgetown enjoyed a strong start to the year. They won five games to open the new season, including a big win against Clemson. The Hoyas dropped meetings against Dayton and Miami in November.

Conference play has been a different story for Georgetown. They netted their first conference win in a triumph against DePaul a few weeks ago, but have been shaky since. The Hoyas lost in overtime to Creighton last weekend and were competitive in a narrow 64-62 home loss by a good UConn team on Tuesday in a clash that had the Hoyas marked as 11.5-point dogs. Georgetown only connected on 44% of its shot attempts while keeping them to a 36% mark. The Hoyas are 2-3 in Big East play and have covered the spread in two of their past five games.

KJ Lewis can be a threat, but is inconsistent. The junior guard has scored at least 12 points in six of his last 10 games. He scored 12 on Saturday and has delivered an average of 14.8 PPG and 5.5 RPG on the year. Malik Mack has scored double digits in four of his last five games. The junior guard has recorded an average of 14.3 PPG. Julius Halaifonua has been kept to fewer than 10 points in his last three efforts. The sophomore center has reached 20 points in three games and is averaging 10.7 PPG on 57% shooting on the season.

Caleb Williams has reached double digits in two of his last five efforts. The sophomore forward has issued an average of 10.2 PPG and 5.6 RPG. Isaiah Abraham contributed with five points on Saturday. The sophomore guard is averaging 6.5 PPG on the season.

The Hoyas are marked 101st in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and are 2-3 on the road, including a win against Marquette. Georgetown is averaging 76.6 points on the season, ranking them 196th. The Hoyas are conceding an average of 74.1 points, which puts them 192nd.

Villanova Dealt Second Big East Defeat

The Villanova Wildcats are seeking their sixth conference win of the season. Villanova has been dominant in Big East action after six games. They stand at 5-2 in conference action. The Wildcats are proving to be one of the best teams in the conference. They lost to Michigan in December, and their conference defeat was against Marquette.

The Wildcats rebounded after the defeat with a road win against Providence last week. Next, they sustained an 86-79  home defeat against St. John’s on Saturday in a bout that had the Wildcats marked as the 2.5-point dogs. Villanova shot 46% in the effort, and the defense was exposed, considering St. John’s posted a 52% mark. The Wildcats have covered the spread in two of their past five games.

Bryce Lindsay has been a consistent player all season. The sophomore guard has scored 15 or fewer points in five of his past seven games. Lindsay is sporting an average of 15 PPG on the year. Duke Brennan has been steady, connecting on 50% of his shots in each conference game. The senior forward has netted an average of 12.2 PPG and 10.6 RPG on the season.

Acaden Lewis has reached double digits in three of his last five games. The freshman guard was quiet in the defeat on Saturday and is averaging 12.1 PPG. Tyler Perkins has sunk 12 or more points in five of his past six efforts. The junior guard has registered 12.1 PPG. Matt Hodge has been efficient, shooting above 50% in five of seven conference games. The freshman forward is averaging 10.3 PPG.

The Wildcats are positioned 27th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. Villanova stands at 7-2 on its home court, including a win against Pittsburgh. Villanova is posting an average of 78.6 points on the season, ranking them 150th. The Wildcats’ defense has been inconsistent. They have conceded 73 or more points in four of their past five games. They are keeping opponents to an average of only 69.6 points on the season, placing them 76th.

Georgetown vs. Villanova Pick

Spread Pick for Georgetown vs. Villanova

  • Georgetown Hoyas +10.5 (5 units)

The Georgetown Hoyas have been competitive in their past few games. They took a good Creighton team to OT on the road last week and almost posted a huge upset after losing by just two points against one of the best teams in the country, UConn, on Saturday. This could be a trap game for Villanova. The Wildcats could be veering past Georgetown and onto a strong UConn team, which they play next.

Furthermore, the Hoyas' defense will keep them in this game. The Hoyas are only conceding 6.0 fewer points per 100 possessions than the Wildcats. The Wildcats can be solved in the defensive end. Their defensive numbers are weak. They are pegged 242nd in field goal defense and 275th against threes. Take the points with the Hoyas.

Over/Under Pick for Georgetown vs. Villanova

  • Over 143 (5 units)

I expect this one to have a ton of scoring. Georgetown is subpar in the defensive end. Villanova is a huge threat from beyond the arc, where they are shooting a dazzling 36% on the season. This is key considering the Hoyas are pegged 235th in the country in three-point defense.

In addition, Georgetown is above average offensively. They are averaging 115.5 points per 100 possessions, which is above the national average, and they are averaging a decent 71 points in conference action. The Wildcats have surrendered 82 and 86 points in their past two games. The over is a convincing 5-0 in the Wildcats’ past five games.
