GA Tech Seeks 10th Win of Season
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter their first conference game of the season with confidence. Georgia Tech has won four straight games. Their last defeat was against Mississippi State to begin December. They posted a win against Lafayette last week and returned from the break with an 89-65 home win against Florida A&M on Sunday to cover the 19.5-point spread. GA Tech shot 61% in the win and kept them to a 35% mark. The Yellow Jackets have covered the spread in three of their past five games.
Kowacie Reeves Jr. is enjoying an outstanding season. The senior forward has scored at least 20 points in four of his past five games after scoring 11 points in the win on Sunday. Reeves Jr. has delivered an average of 15.4 PPG on 43% shooting on the season. Baye Ndongo has been a threat, shooting at least 50% in five straight games. The junior forward scored 15 points on Monday. He is solid defensively and is averaging 12.1 PPG.
Mouhamed Sylla has also been steady. The freshman is averaging 11.2 PPG in a 59% mark from the field. Lamar Washington has reached 20 points in two of his past five games. The senior guard has issued an average of 10.9 PPG and 6.2 APG. Akai Fleming has netted 12 or more points in five of his last six games. The freshman guard has netted an average of 10.2 PPG on the year.
The Yellow Jackets are ranked 135th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and have only played one true road game, in which they lost. Georgia Tech is averaging 75.5 points on the year, marking them 267th. The Yellow Jackets are conceding an average of 70.8 points, placing them 92nd in DI.
Duke Charged with First Defeat of Season
The Duke Blue Devils begin conference play with just one defeat on the season. Duke is a national contender this season and has met expectations so far. They have played several tough opponents and came away with a triumph against Florida and a 66-60 win against Michigan State earlier this month. The Blue Devils were hit with a narrow 82-81 defeat against Texas Tech in their previous action. Duke connected on 52% of its shots, but the defense, which is among the best in DI, was shaky, giving up a 55% efficiency. The Blue Devils have covered the spread in just one of their past five games.
Cameron Boozer is one of the best players in the country. The freshman forward surpassed 20 points in five of his past six games, including 29 points in the win against the Gators. Boozer is sporting an average of 23.3 PPG and 10 RPG on the season. Isaiah Evans has been inconsistent, shooting below 35% in three of his past five games. The sophomore guard scored 13 points in the win against the Gators and has recorded an average of 11.8 PPG.
Patrick Ngongba II has been a beast in the defensive end. The sophomore center has connected on 50% of his shots in all but one game and is averaging 11.1 PPG and 6.5 RPG. Caleb Foster scored eight points in the recent defeat. The junior guard has issued an average of 9 PPG on the year. Dame Sarr has scored nine or fewer points in nine of 11 games. The freshman guard has reported an average of 6.6 PPG.
The Blue Devils are ranked sixth in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. They dropped three spots to #6 in the recent edition of the AP Top 25. Duke is an undefeated 6-0 on its home court. They have reached 90 points in six games this season and are scoring an average of 87.3 points on the year, ranking them 75th. The Blue Devils are conceding an average of 62.6 points, placing them ninth in the country.
Georgia Tech vs. Duke Pick
Spread Pick for Georgia Tech vs. Duke
- Duke Blue Devils 25 (5 units)
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have been winning games this month, but it’s been a rather easy schedule against mid-major teams, including games against Monmouth and Marist. The Duke Blue Devils have played against many ranked teams and have beaten Texas, Arkansas, and Florida, to name a few.
Furthermore, Georgia Tech is subpar in the offensive end. Duke is averaging 16.6 more points per 100 possessions and stands 15th in adjusted offensive efficiency. The Blue Devils are one of the best defensive teams in the country. The Yellow Jackets are mediocre in the defensive end, conceding 104.5 points per 100 possessions compared to only 92.5 points per 100 possessions by the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils are winning by huge margins. All but two of their wins have been by nine points or more.
Over/Under Pick for Georgia Tech vs. Duke
- Over 150 (5 units)
I expect a shootout. Georgia Tech is posting big numbers due in part to its quick pace. Georgia Tech has scored 73 or more points in five straight games. They stand 62nd in DI in adjusted tempo.
In addition, Duke is shooting a dazzling 50% on the season and takes a ton of threes. They attempt an average of 27.5 threes per game. Also, the Jackets' defense has been shaky against strong opponents. They squandered 92 points against Georgia and 85 points against Mississippi State. The over is a convincing 6-0 in the Jackets' past six games.
