The Bulldogs obliterated the Bluejays in the second half of Tuesday's statement victory, outscoring the 23rd-ranked visitors 46-25. The Bulldogs were 26-9 last season, finishing second in theΒ West Coast ConferenceΒ with a 14-4 regular season record. They won the WCC Tournament, but couldn't sustain their momentum, losing in the second round of the NCAA tourney. Gonzaga is led by long-time head coach Mark Few, who has a 744-152 record in Spokane. The Zags were picked to win the WCC in the conference's preseason poll.
Gonzaga lost several key contributors from last season's squad, including veteran guards Ryan Nembhard (10.5 PPG and 9.8 APG) and Khalif Battle (13.6 PPG and 3.7 RPG). The Bulldogs aren't short on returning talent, though. Senior forward Graham Ike is back (17.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG) to lead one of the country's most experienced college hoops squads (average age of 21.2 years old). Braden Huff, a 6-10 redshirt junior, was a force in the postseason, giving the Zags an intimidating frontcourt combo. Gonzaga has versatile, lengthy wings and plenty of depth after Few made several significant offseason additions through the portal. A few of the impactful newcomers are senior wing Tyon Grant-Foster (14.8 PPG and 5.9 RPG at Grand Canyon), senior guard Adam Miller (9.8 PPG at Arizona State), and senior wing Jalen Warley (7.5 PPG at Florida State).
Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball Injury Report:Β No injuries to report for Friday's game against Arizona State.
Sun Devils need a statement win to spark their season
Arizona State (2-0 SU, 1-0-1 ATS, and 0-2 O/U) defeated Southern Utah (81-64) and Utah Tech (81-66) in its first two games of the college hoops season. Sparky shot 49 percent in game one, but was outscored in the paint and outrebounded, allowing 16 offensive rebounds. They made up for it with 24 fast-break points. Last game, ASU led from start to finish, scoring 38 points in the paint and 19 off the Trailblazers' 16 turnovers.
The Sun Devils were 13-20 last season, finishing 4-16 in Big 12 Conference competition (15th place). After the regular season, they were invited to participate in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, where they lost in the first round to Nebraska. ASU is led by 11th-year head coach Bobby Hurley, who has compiled a 168-151 record in Tempe. The 2025-26 Sun Devils squad was picked to finish 16th (last) in the Big 12's preseason poll.
Arizona State has a new-look roster for this season, with only two returnees. Hurley added one freshman and seven transfers this past offseason in an effort to get back over .500 and cool off his hot seat. 7-foot-1 frosh center Mor Massamba Diop leads the team in scoring (16.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.5 BPG, and 1.5 SPG). Three other Sun Devils are averaging double-digit points: senior University of Cumberlands transfer guard Anthony Johnson (12.0 PPG and 3.5 APG), senior Pepperdine transfer guard Maurice Odum (11.5 PPG, 7.0 APG, and 5.0 RPG), and senior Oakland transfer forward Allen Mukeba (10.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG). Senior guard Adante' Holiman, a Georgia Southern transfer, has yet to suit up, but is expected to be a key player after averaging 16.9 points per game last season. Junior guard Marcus Adams Jr. (4.0 PPG), a top recruit who signed with Kansas out of high school, is another player to watch.
Arizona State Sun Devils Basketball Injury Report: Holiman (elbow) is questionable to play in Friday's NCAAB game against Gonzaga.
Gonzaga vs. Arizona State Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Gonzaga vs. Arizona State
- Bulldogs -12 (5 Units)
Are the Zags Final Four contenders? They certainly looked the part in the second half against Creighton earlier this week. The Bulldogs will have several opportunities to prove it in non-conference play, with upcoming games against Alabama, Maryland, Kentucky, UCLA, and Oregon. While Arizona State will punch back when Gonzaga takes the early lead, I doubt they'll keep pace for 40 minutes. ASU is an untested, newly assembled team without a dominant scorer or playmaker, while the Zags have so much depth they play like they don't care who puts the ball in the hoop (20 assists per game). Ike and Huff are great passers out of the post, and their offensive rebounding prowess makes them a scary matchup for the Sun Devils bigs (Gonzaga ranks 16th in offensive rebounding percentage). When they're not moving the ball to find good looks in the half-court, they'll turn defense into offense with transition baskets.
Bet on the Bulldogs to pull away in the second half to cover the spread against Sparky.
Over/Under Pick for Gonzaga vs. Arizona State
- Under 162 (5 Units)
The Zags and Sun Devils are a combined 5-0 to the under to start the season. That's how I recommend wagering on Friday's 162-point total, as I feel confident the home team will be competitive enough to keep the Bulldogs from continuing their dominant ways. Both teams rank in the top 50 in defensive efficiency, and ASU ranks 36th in opponent true shooting percentage. They won't keep the visitors in check for long stretches of the game, but they'll be able to prevent them from going on lopsided scoring stretches. On the other end of the court, the Bulldogs will clearly give the Sun Devils fits. They just made a top-25 Creighton team look pathetic, holding them to 20 points in the paint and 28 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs' rim protectors will give the frosh Diop headaches, likely forcing him into foul trouble, and their lengthy wings will be all over the Sun Devils' small guards.
This total is too high β bet on the under!
