The college basketball betting action continues Saturday, February 14, with the Grand Canyon Lopes taking on the San Jose State Spartans in the Mountain West Conference showdown at Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose, CA, so here’s our Grand Canyon vs. San Jose State prediction.
The Lopes meet the Spartans for the second time this season. In January, Grand Canyon beat San Jose State 76-58 as a 16.5-point home favorite, and the game went under the 141.5-point line.
Let’s take a closer look at this Grand Canyon vs. San Jose State prediction, one of our NCAAB picks for Saturday’s slate. The tip-off is set at 5:00 PM ET.
Grand Canyon hopes to avoid its third straight loss
The Grand Canyon Lopes (15-9; 11-13 ATS; 11-13 O/U) are 8-5 in their inaugural Mountain West Conference campaign. They’ve struggled a bit lately, dropping three of their previous five games overall, including the last two against UNLV 80-78 on the road and New Mexico 70-64 at home.

Last Wednesday, the Lopes made just 38.3% of their field goals. Grand Canyon went 4-for-25 from beyond the arc, whereas New Mexico hit nine of its 16 shots from deep. Junior guard Makaih Williams led the way for the Lopes with 20 points and five rebounds.
Williams tallies 13.4 points per game. Senior guard Jaden Henley averages 17.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, while senior forward Nana Owusu-Anane posts 9.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Grand Canyon scores 108.8 points per 100 possessions (160th in the country) and allows just 96.0 points in return (18th). The Lopes make only 30.1% of their shots from deep (333rd), but their defense has been outstanding for most of the season. Grand Canyon is No. 76 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
San Jose State is free-falling
The San Jose State Spartans (6-18; 12-11 ATS; 13-10 O/U) are 1-12 in conference play. They’ve been horrendous lately, winning just one of their previous 14 games overall. The lowly Spartans are winless in seven straight outings.
SJSU is coming off Tuesday’s 82-75 road loss against UNLV. The Spartans shot 38.1% from the field (11-for-24 from downtown) and were outscored 40-14 in the paint. Junior guard Colby Garland led the way for SJSU with 23 points and five rebounds.
Garland posts 18.6 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game. Senior forward Yaphet Moundi tallies 12.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Jermaine Washington adds 11.9 points and 2.8 assists a night. Moundi missed 11 straight games with an injury and is doubtful for Saturday’s game against Grand Canyon.
San Jose State scores 108.0 points per 100 possessions (170th in the country) and surrenders 113.5 points in return (282nd). The Spartans’ defense is 355th in the country in 2-point percentage (58.5%) and 299th in 3-point percentage (36.1%). SJSU is No. 264 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Grand Canyon vs. San Jose State Pick
Spread Pick for Grand Canyon vs. San Jose State
- Grand Canyon (4 units)
The Lopes are not a great offensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but they will get things going in this game. As I noted above, the Spartans’ defense has been awful this season. Hereof, I will take the Lopes, who are a much better defensive and rebounding team than SJSU.
The Spartans are 348th in the country in defensive rebound percentage (63.9%), whereas the Lopes rank 28th in this category (73.5%). In their first meeting of the season, the Lopes outrebounded the Spartans 33-25, and SJSU made just 36.5% of its field goals (6-for-19 from deep).
Over/Under Pick for Grand Canyon vs. San Jose State
- Under (4 units)
The Spartans have had a couple of solid offensive displays during their seven-game losing streak, but on five occasions, they failed to surpass a 62-point mark. SJSU plays at a slow pace (64.3 possessions per 40 minutes, 328th in the country), and the Spartans’ offensive execution is far from elite level.
The Spartans make just 45.1% of their shots from inside the arc (353rd). They will struggle to score against the Lopes, so I will take the under despite SJSU’s defensive shortcomings. The Lopes register 67.9 possessions per 40 minutes (164th), and their 3-point shooting has been terrible thus far, as I already noted.
