Hawaii is a team worth monitoring this season
Hawaii compiled a 15-16 record in 2024-25 (7-13 in Big West play), just its second-ever losing season. The Rainbow Warriors are on the road to start the season for the first time in 19 seasons and just the sixth time in the last 55 years. They are led by 11th-year head coach Eran Ganot, who is 171-118 during his time in Honolulu. Hawaii returns only one starter from last season's squad, welcoming nine newcomers to its 13-player roster. They were picked to finish third in the Big West preseason poll.

While a new-look team, the Rainbow Warriors are not light on experience, with an average age of over 23. The infusion of talent comes from several different levels of competition, including D-I, D-II, junior college, and prep school. With six D-I transfers and the junior college player of the year joining the mix, former NBA champion and general manager Patty Mills has helped Ganot assemble a squad capable of getting back over the .500 mark.
Forward Gytis Nemeiksa, who started 14 games for Hawai'i last season, was named to the six-player preseason all-conference team. He averaged 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds as a junior. Forward Jalen Myers (10.5 PPG and 5.4 RPG), a graduate transfer from Norfolk State, is a high-efficiency lefty scorer with NCAA Tournament experience. Isaac Finlinson, the JUCO POY, averaged 18.7 points with 6.6 rebounds per game at Snow College last season. A veteran shot creator, he had three 30-plus performances. A couple of other Rainbow Warriors to watch against the Ducks are South Dakota transfer G/F Dre Bullock (12.1 PPG, including 31 vs. Omaha), senior forward Harry Rouhliadeff (6.5 PPG and 3.7 RPG), and D-II transfer guard Isaiah Kerr (13.2 PPG and 4.1 RPG).
Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors Basketball Injury Report:Β No injuries to report for Tuesday's game against Oregon.
Oregon has recruited very well under Dana Altman
Oregon was 25-10 last season, with a 12-8 record in Big Ten competition, its first year in the conference. The Ducks reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, losing 87-83 to former Pac-12 foe Arizona. Head coach Dana Altman is back for his 16th season in Eugene (370-162 record) to lead an Oregon team that's 13-2 in season-opening games and 15-0 in home openers under him.
UO returns three players from last season's team, including senior center Nate Bittle (14.2 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 2.1 BPG), junior guard Jackson Shelstad (13.7 PPG and 38% 3PT%), and junior forward Kwame Evans Jr. (6.1 PPG and 4.6 RPG). Senior guards TJ Bamba and Keeshawn Barthelemy are gone, along with frontcourt contributors Brandon Angel and Jadrian Tracey. Last season's leading scorers, Bittle and Shelstad, will be the wings that make the Ducks fly in 2025-26. A former top-25 recruit, Shelstad was one of the best point guards in the Big Ten last season. Bittle was the best shot blocker in the conference, and he can stretch the floor, too (34% three-point shooter). Both shoot over 80 percent at the charity stripe in 2024-25.
Oregon hopes to get more out of a few former top recruits in Evans, Duke/Ohio State transfer forward Sean Stewart, and Texas transfer forward Devon Pryor this season. All three are athletic and were brimming with upside coming out of high school, but they'll need to start living up to the hype at some point. A few other Ducks to watch include Elon transfer guard Takai Simpkins (16.4 PPG and 37% 3PT%), senior forward Dezdrick Lindsay (16.0 PPG and 7.3 RPG in 2023-24 at Florida Southwestern), and sophomore guard Jamari Phillips (top-50 recruit in 2024 HS class).
Oregon Ducks Basketball Injury Report:Β Shelstad (hand) is questionable to play against Hawaii.
Hawaii vs. Oregon Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Hawaii vs. Oregon
- Hawai'i +12.5 (5 Units)
The Rainbow Warriors are experienced and, with time to gel, could be a special team in the Big West this season. They have several polished scorers and playmakers who will be eager to make a statement against a Big Ten team. I'm especially intrigued by Myers, Finlinson, and Bullock. They're veteran bucket-getters who will treat this opportunity like an NCAA Tournament game. The Ducks will likely be without their floor general, Shelstad, who broke his hand a month ago. If he doesn't suit up, Oregon will look like a much different team tomorrow than it will in Big Ten play. It's unclear who the Ducks' third scorer is; their wing depth is unproven, and they lack two-way players. With that said, I believe the Rainbow Warriors will keep the final score within single digits on Tuesday in Eugene.
Over/Under Pick for Hawaii vs. Oregon
- Under 146.5 (5 Units)
Hawaii played at a slow tempo last season, ranking 249th in pace (68.8 possessions per game). Oregon is typically faster-paced, but with Shelstad unlikely to play, they won't push it as much as usual. His backup, Wei Lin, is a newcomer from China. While he could be a key contributor this season with his three-point shooting touch, I'm not confident he can run the show from day one. Oregon will attempt to set the tone at home, but the Rainbow Warriors are experienced and hungry to compete. I believe they'll give the Ducks a serious run for their money on Tuesday, resulting in a closely-contested, lower-scoring game.
