Rainbow Warriors: Elite defense on a roll
Hawai'i has been a force since early December, winning seven straight games primarily on the back of the No. 1 scoring defense in the Big West. They allow just 61.7 PPG and recently held UC Riverside to a staggering 45 points.
The Warriors' offense is led by Isaac Johnson, who averages 13.0 PPG on 53% shooting and is a nearly automatic 89.7% from the free-throw line. Forward Harry Rouhliadeff has also found his groove, coming off a 22-point, 7-rebound performance against UTEP. Hawai'i excels at "grinding" games down; they dominate the glass with a +11.2 rebounding margin and force opponents into low-efficiency perimeter shots.
Tritons: High-efficiency offense at home
UC San Diego features a more explosive offensive profile, averaging 81.5 PPG. They are led by junior forward Leo Beath, a transfer who has taken the league by storm, averaging 17.1 PPG (hitting 49.1% of his threes).
The Tritons play a modern, pace-and-space style, averaging 9.8 made 3-pointers per game. Point guard Tom Beattie (a Hawai'i transfer) will have a chip on his shoulder facing his former team; he leads the Tritons with 45 assists this season and is the engine of their transition game. At LionTree Arena, the Tritons are 4-1 this season and have shown an ability to out-shoot teams that attempt to slow the tempo.
Spread pick for Hawai'i vs. UC San Diego
- Hawai'i +2.5 (-118)
While UC San Diego has the home-court advantage, Hawai'i is playing with a level of defensive cohesion that is rare in early January. The Warriors' massive advantage on the boards (41.6 RPG vs. 37.0 RPG) should allow them to control the tempo and limit the Tritons' second-chance opportunities. Additionally, Hawai'i's ability to defend the three (allowing only 5.0 makes per game) matches up perfectly against UCSD's primary weapon. Expect a close battle that the Warriors have a strong chance of winning outright.
Total pick for Hawai'i vs. UC San Diego
- Under 143.5 (-115)
This is a classic "clash of styles" game. UC San Diego wants a track meet, but Hawai'i has successfully forced every opponent during their 7-game win streak into a half-court grind. The Warriors have hit the Under in 8 of their last 10 games. Given that conference road games often see a dip in shooting percentages, this game is likely to finish in the 68-70 range for both teams, staying under the 143.5 total.
