Hofstra is coming off a loss
After picking up a solid road win at Bucknell, Hofstra faced Temple last Wednesday and fell 81-76 on the road. Now the Pride are back in Philadelphia and looking to bounce back.
Hofstra is led by one of the more productive guard duos in the early season. Cruz Davis is averaging 19.4 points along with 4.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, while Preston Edmead is right behind him with 15 points and 5.8 assists. Both players can create off the dribble and score in bunches, and Hofstra will need them to stay aggressive throughout the night. Biggie Patterson (12.4 ppg) gives the Pride a third scoring option, and forward Victory Onuetu has been strong on the glass with 9.2 rebounds per game and 9.8 ppg.
The Pride rank 156th in KenPom. The defense is ahead, ranking 138th in adjusted efficiency, and the offense is only 209th.
A test for La Salle
The Explorers opened up this season with a new head coach in Darris Nichols, who went 68-63 in four seasons with Radford. The team got off to a 2-0 start after routing Coppin State 87-59 and 73-60 Monmouth. After that, the Explorers ran into stiffer competition and lost three straight, falling to Temple 90-63, Penn State 83-69, and Villanova 70-55. On Saturday, the Explorers snapped the losing streak, but it was against Lancaster Bible College, 75-46.
According to KenPom, La Salle is 230th in the nation. They are balanced, ranking 220th on offense and 239th on defense.
Through the first six games, Jaeden Marshall (12.5 ppg), Ashton Walker (10.5 ppg), and Jerome Brewer Jr (9.7 ppg) have led the team. Marshall averaged 10.3 ppg last season with Niagara, and Brewer put up 13.8 ppg with East Texas A&M. As for Ashton Walker, he is a freshman, a three-star recruit who was rated as the 48th best point guard in the country according to 247Sports.
Hofstra vs La Salle Predictions
Hofstra vs La Salle ATS Pick:
-
Hofstra -2.5 (4 units)
Hofstra has played the 88th-toughest schedule in the country according to KenPom, while La Salle sits at 204th, yet the Pride have still been the more efficient shooting and defensive team.
La Salle hasn’t handled upgrades in competition well, and the Temple comparison tells the story. Hofstra lost to Temple by five, while La Salle was blown out by 27.
The Pride are battle-tested and have been sharper on both ends. I’ll back Hofstra to cover.
Hofstra vs La Salle Total Pick:
-
Over 142 (4 units)
We’re getting a manageable total there largely because La Salle plays at one of the slowest tempos in the country. Even so, the Explorers still surrendered 90 to Temple and 83 to Penn State. In those two games, better offenses exploited a lot of their. defensive issues.
Hofstra is 4–0 to the over and has the scoring punch to push the pace, especially once La Salle falls behind and has to increase its pace. The over is the play.
