Cougars beat Cougars on the road

Houston took care of one of the toughest teams in the Big 12 on Saturday when it defeated No. 16 BYU 77-66 on the road as a 1.5-point favorite. Houston is all about defense, and that came to fruition as they allowed just four baskets in the final 13 minutes against the Cougars. Kingston Flemings led Houston with 19 points and five assists, while Chris Cenac Jr. added 16 points and five boards.

Houston shot 48% from the field against the Cougars and held them to just 40% shooting. Fershman sensation A.J. Dybanta was fantastic as usual with 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting, but the rest of the team really struggled, especially sharpshooter Richie Saunders, who went 1-for-8 from the field.

Houston has won four straight and 15 of their last 16 games. They rank 5th overall in KenPom, 4th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 9th in Adjusted Defense. They also rank 69th in total rebound percentage.

Utes need a Win

Utah comes into this game after losing five straight games and 10 of 11, including a 71-59 loss on the road to Kansas. Keanu Dawes led the Utes with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Terrence Brown added 16 points and four steals. The Utes shot just 40% from the field, though they did hold Kansas to 3 of 18 shooting from beyond the arc.

Brown leads the Utes with 21.1 points per game and 3.9 assists, while shooting 45% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range. Don McHenry adds with 17.0 points per game, while shooting 44.3% from the field (40.4% 3pt).

The Utes rank 121st overall on KenPom, 87th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 210th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. Utah also ranks 256th in rebound rate.

Houston vs. Utah Pick and Odds

  • Utah +16.5 (4 units)

Houston is the better team on paper, but the Utes can compete in this game based on altitude and the fact that the Cougars will have a bit of a hangover after the nice win over BYU. As bad as Utah has been, they've been covering most of their losses, going 6-2 ATS in their last eight games. Utah also shoots the ball well at home, making 47.6% from the field, while Houston struggles to defend the 3-point shot on the road (35.2%). The Utes will compete and lose by single digits.

Over/Under Pick for Houston vs. Utah

  • Under 142.5 (4 units)

Houston relies on defense to win and sure, they can score. But they are holding teams to just 39.3% shooting overall. Utah is 177th in Adjusted Tempo, and they'll try to push it some because they'll want to slow it down because Houston ranks 357th in Adjusted Tempo. Houston has gone under in three straight games, while Utah has also gone under in three straight.
